Lesson
Materials, Tools, Equipment and
1 Testing Devices

What’s New

There are things that make a Computer Technicians do his task faster and more efficient. With
the help of equipment, tools, accessories, materials and testing devices and with the skills of a good
computer technician, task can be more reliable and the finish output can be guaranteed functional.

-2-
Equipment most commonly refers to a set of tools or other objects commonly used to
achieve a particular job.

Equipment and Accessories

LAN Card
It is a network interface card. This is a computer circuit board or
card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a
network.

Uninterruptible Power Supply

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is an electrical apparatus
that provides emergency power to a load when the input power
source or mains power fails.

Automatic Voltage Regulator

The automatic voltage regulator is used to regulate the voltage. It
takes the fluctuate voltage and changes them into a constant
voltage.

Server – is a part of a network. It is a special computer that users

on the network can access to carry out a particular job.

Port hub – is a connector on the back of a computer or other

device. A port is either a serial port or a parallel port.

-3-
Modem - (Modulator-Demodulator) The modem is a device that
allows a given computer to share data or otherwise a device which
let computers exchange information

A webcam is a video camera that feeds or streams an image or

video in real time to or through a computer to a computer network,
such as the Internet.

External CD/DVD ROM is a removable USB type disc drive that

uses laser light or electromagnetic waves within or near the visible light
spectrum as part of the process of reading or writing data to or
from optical discs.

Scanner- it is an input device that read text or illustration printed on

paper, translates the information into a form that a computer can
use

Printer - is a piece of hardware that produces a paper copy (also

known as ‘hardcopy’) of the information generated by the computer.

Flash drive– RAM that can retain data without electrical power. It
is widely used for BIOS chips and for digital camera and digital
music storage.

-4-
A tool is any hand held instrument or simple piece of implement that you hold in
your hands and use to do a particular kind of work.

Tools

Allen Wrench an L-shaped metal bar with a hexagonal head at

each end, used to turn bolts and screws having hexagonal sockets.

An antistatic wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet is

an antistatic device used to safely ground a person working on
very sensitive electronic equipment, to prevent the buildup
of static electricity on their body, which can result in Electro Static
Discharge (ESD).

Crimper is a tool used to make cold weld joints between Ethernet

cable wires and RJ45 plug.

A wire stripper is a small, hand-held device used to strip the

electrical insulation from electric wires.

Long nose Pliers – is used for holding, bending and stretching the
lead of electronics component or connecting wire.

-5-
Soldering Iron – is used to join two or more metal conductors with
the support of soldering lead melted around it.

Desoldering Tool – is used to unsolder unwanted parts or

component in the circuit with the support of soldering pencil.

Flat Screw Driver- is used to drive or fasten negative slotted

screws.

Philips Screw Driver- is used to drive or fasten positive slotted

screws.

.
Ethernet cable tester is an electronic device used to verify the
electrical connections in a signal cable or other wired assembly.
Basic Ethernet cable testers are continuity testers that verify the
existence of a conductive path between ends of the cable, and
verify the correct wiring of connectors on the cable.

A multitester, also known as a VOM (volt-ohm-milliammeter), is an

electronic measuring instrument that combines several
measurement functions in one unit. A typical multitester can
measure voltage, current and resistance.

-6-
Materials are consumable items that are used to make something works. In computer, these
are the items that are attached, installed and/or used once only.

Materials

Ethernet cable is a common type of network cable used with wired

networks. Ethernet cables connect devices such as PCs, routers,
and switches within a local area network. .

(RJ45) Registered Jack 45 is a standard type of physical

connector for network cables. An 8-pin/8-position plug or jack is
commonly used to connect computers onto Ethernet-based local
area networks (LAN).

Computer network, two or more computers that are connected

with one another for the purpose of communicating data
electronically.

An Operating System is the most important software that runs

on a computer. It manages the computer’s memory and processes,
as well as all its software and hardware.

Application Software (Apps for short) is a type of computer program

that performs a specific personal, educational, and business function.
Each program is designed to assist the user with a particular process,
which may be related to productivity, creativity, and/or
communication.

-7-
Software is a collection of data or computer instructions that tell the
computer how to work.

Sound Device Driver This allows the sound card to facilitate

audio output from the computer and communicate with the speaker.

Motherboard’s Manual provides information on the installation

and setup procedures for your new motherboard.
The motherboard drivers act like a software interface in between
the hardware motherboard of the computer and the software of the
system.
