Troubleshooting Report on Common Computer
Problems
Computers play a crucial role in everyday activities, from personal use to business operations.
However, they are susceptible to hardware and software issues that can impact their
performance. This report aims to identify common computer problems, describe their diagnosis
process, and provide solutions based on manufacturer guidelines and best practices.
Hardware Problems: Causes, Diagnosis, and Fixes
1. Overheating
○ Cause: Dust accumulation in cooling systems, poor ventilation, or faulty cooling
fans.
○ Diagnosis: Monitor temperature using BIOS or third-party software (e.g.,
HWMonitor, SpeedFan).
○ Fix: Clean internal components, improve airflow, replace thermal paste, or
replace malfunctioning cooling fans.
2. Faulty RAM
○ Cause: Corrupt memory modules, incompatible RAM sticks, or physical damage.
○ Diagnosis: Use built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic tool or MemTest86.
○ Fix: Reseat or replace RAM sticks with manufacturer-recommended models.
3. Power Supply Failure
○ Cause: Aging power supply unit (PSU), electrical surges, or inadequate wattage.
○ Diagnosis: Use a power supply tester or swap with a known working PSU.
○ Fix: Replace the PSU with one that meets the computer’s power requirements.
Software Problems: Causes, Diagnosis, and Fixes
1. System Crashes
○ Cause: Corrupt system files, incompatible software, or overheating.
○ Diagnosis: Check Event Viewer logs, run SFC (System File Checker), or use
Windows Reliability Monitor.
○ Fix: Perform a system update, run SFC/scannow in Command Prompt, or
reinstall the operating system if necessary.
2. Virus Infections
○ Cause: Downloading malicious files, visiting untrusted websites, or lack of
antivirus protection.
○ Diagnosis: Run a full system scan using antivirus software (e.g., Windows
Defender, Malwarebytes).
○ Fix: Remove detected threats, update security software, enable firewall
protection, and avoid untrusted downloads.
3. Driver Conflicts
○ Cause: Outdated, missing, or incompatible drivers.
○ Diagnosis: Check Device Manager for warning icons or use manufacturer driver
update tools.
○ Fix: Update drivers manually via manufacturer websites or use Windows Update.
Conclusion Diagnosing and rectifying hardware and software issues are essential skills for
maintaining a functional computer system. Using built-in diagnostic tools and following
manufacturer guidelines ensures effective troubleshooting. Proper maintenance, regular
updates, and security practices can help prevent future issues.
