Performing Computer
2 Operation
Nowadays, one of the devices that is considered as a necessity is the computer. It is
undeniably useful and helpful in business, office and even for students for their
needs. In all fields of specialization, computer is always present and badly needed to
simplify the tasks. Hence, the knowledge to understand the basic use of computer,
how to operate it as well as the familiarization of some devices that plays a big role
in the operation of computer is one of the skills everybody must possess. This module
covers all the above-mentioned concepts.
What’s In
Jessa needed to finish her projects and she needs to research on what devices will
help her complete the tasks. Let us help her identify the different devices that she
can use by filling-in the table below.
9
What’s New
Activity 1:
Jessa has a new laptop and she is not aware of the correct procedures in shutting
down the computer. Help Jessa in arranging in exact order the procedures below.
Turn-off AVR/UPS
Unplug AVR/UPS
Select shutdown.
What is It
Personal Safety
Before you start working, make sure that your working environment is safe as
well as your equipment.
Spot the hazard in your working environment. Hazard is anything that could
cause harm.
Example:
1. Pick up anything from the floor that could cause you to stumble.
2. If you do some electronics related repair, put the electronics waste
in a trash can.
3. The wiring of your devices must be properly organized.
4. Put away foods and liquid from your computer.
5. Check the wiring of your devices for the possible open wire.

INPUT
Input is the data you entered into the computer using input devices for
processing.
PROCESS
Inside the computer system unit are the processor, random access memory
(RAM) or often called as memory, and the hard disk.
Memory is closely associated with the processor. As you entered the data, the
memory temporarily holds it before and after it is processed. Memory temporarily
holds the data because once you shut down the computer, all the data, information,
and instructions also are gone. Memory also holds the programs needed by the
memory. Programs are loaded once the operating system is loaded after you
opened the computer.
The data from memory is now loaded to the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
also known as the processor. The processor performs the operation that converts
the data into information. Data can be a letter, symbols, numbers, images, and
perhaps no meaning to the users. In the school scenario, data can be students’
quizzes, exam scores, project grades, which later combined and processed by the
1
computer becomes a final grade which is considered as information. After processing,
the result is forwarded back to memory for temporary storage.
Using the save command from your application software, you can store the
information to other storage devices like hard disk, flash drive, and external hard
disk for a long time which you can access later for further manipulation.
OUTPUT
The Output is the result produced by the processor. The output is usable
information and it can be in the form of numbers, words, graphs, charts.
As you enter the data or after the data has been processed, you will see the result
through a computer monitor, which is considered as the primary output device.
The computer waits for the user to enter data. This data will be used by the
computer to process and later produce an output. Data can be in the form of text,
numbers, audio, images, and video, therefore different input devices are needed to
accept data to be processed.
A. Input Devices
Users’ need devices to conveniently enter data into the computer. Here are
some of the common input devices.
Mouse
Touch Screen
1
Computer
Microphone is a device that accepts audio
Computer input from users.
Microphone
Web Camera
Computer Scanner
Joy Stick
B. Application Software
Aside from input devices that are used for entering data, the computer also
needs application software that interacts between the user and computer
hardware. Each application software has its specific function so determining the
appropriate software to be used based on the tasks to be done is necessary.
1
Some of the common application software used:
Word Processor - is software that allows users to create, edit, and print documents.
Examples: MS Word, Libre Office Writer, Open Office Writer
Presentation Software - these are programs that allow users to create an electronic
presentation for reports and other functions in the form of slides.
Examples: MS Powerpoint, Prezi, Zoho Show
Educational Software- these include tutorials and electronic lessons that give
students knowledge or training in a particular subject or skill, such as Math or
Science or in gardening or cooking.
Volatile Storage Device – means that all the data are gone in the absence of
electricity.
Example: RAM
Non-Volatile Storage Device –means that all the data remains in the storage even
in the absence of electricity.
Examples: hard disk, flash drive, CD, DVD, memory stick, SD card
1
Computer Storage Devices can be:
Fixed Storage Devices – devices that are attached inside the computer
unit.
1
Just like a hard disk, you can store a lot of
information but the only difference is that it is
detachable and can be transferred to another
computer to access information.
Cloud Storage – some websites offer free storage to users. They just
need to sign up before they can avail this free storage.
Drive C
Drive D
Point your mouse and double click to the drive (drive C, D, E for
example) where you store your file.
1
2. Double click again the folder where your file is located.
3. Once you found your file, double click the mouse to open it.
Your computer has a “Search” feature where you can type at least part of the
filename of your file, then the computer will find it for you.
Drive C
Drive D
4. Enter the filename you want to search in the search box and press
enter.
5. A list of files will be displayed as a result of a search. Select your file
and double click to open it.
The computer output device converts information into a human-readable form. But
even without an output device, the computer can continue to function, however,
how will you know that what you are doing has no errors? Can you imagine the
scenario if you detach the monitor?
1
Types of Monitor
Types of Printer
1
c. LCD and LED Printer- Similar to a laser printer, but uses liquid
crystals or light-emitting diodes rather than a laser to produce an
image on the drum.
5. Speaker - Used to play sound. They may be built into the system unit or
connected with cables. Speakers allow you to listen to music and hear
sound effects from your computer.
1
5. Click “File” menu above, select “Print” or simply hold down “CTRL” key
followed by “P”. Then fill-up or click common
If everything has been properly set, click the “Print” button to start the printin
Enter the page specific page number or combination of page numbers you want to print.
Example: If your document has 20 pages and you entered 1, 3, 10-15 means computer will print page 1, page 3,
If you wish to print all pages, just leave the box blank.
