Rodrigo Barbano
In 2014 we built a DIY bookscanner.
And then the big question appeared: which works are safe
to be digitized?
There was no means to know that information and to be
sure that we weren't infringing any law.
Therefore, it seemed to us that we needed to create our
own database for rights clearance, available for anyone to
use.

That's how we created the database Autores.Uy:
http://autores.uy
We did it with the volunteer support of a group of
librarians, programmers and lawyers.
Right now, we have 10,000 author's registries
(roughly 25% of the total authors from Uruguay)
and some thousands works digitized. Infographic of digitized works in
the libraries of Canelones.

The database serves two main purposes:
● To be able to digitize safely hundreds of works
and bring that possibility to others.
● To provide input for public policy makers to make
right decisions concerning copyright law reforms
and cultural public policies.

Some unexpected outcomes that we didn't
plan when building the database:
● Other GLAM institutions are using our
methods of identification of the PD.
● People come to us to release works into the
public domain. Also some heirs have come to
us to release the work of their relatives.

Now what?
We are updating our software and creating tools to
facilitate the adoption by others of the framework we
created.
This will allow an easy installation with custom copyright
terms, languages and visual flavours.
Also we want to improve our capacity of digitize works,
not only written, but also sound and visual works.
