Quarter 3– Module 2:Types of
Computer System Errors
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the Types of Computer System Errors in working with computer devices and
equipment. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order
in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.

The set of modules was designed and written to help you be familiar with the different
concept and develop the different skills required in the specialization Computer
Hardware Servicing. This module particularly focuses on how to plan and prepare
for diagnosis of computer systems errors.

After going through this module, you are expected to plan and prepare for diagnosis
of computer system errors (TLE_ICTCS9DT-IIIa-g-1).

1. Identify and describe the different types of computer systems errors; and,

2. Identify the different types of operating system (OS) errors.

Read each item carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answers
on a separate sheet of paper.
1. This occurs even if you try to disconnect the computer from the internet. This is
called the aftershock virus, which will proceed running even if there is no internet
connection.
a. Lots of popup windows appear
b. Lots of hardware installation windows appear
c. Application causes system to restart
2. When the operating system loads, a loading sound can be heard, but suddenly
stops. No sound will be heard when you try to play an audio file.
a. Sound on/off error
b. Safe mode doesn’t work
c. Does not boot
3. A program takes the whole screen when opened, like for example a game and/or
a program application. It will cause a system restart when it is closed.
a. Lots of popup windows appear
b. Lots of hardware installation windows appear
c. Application causes system to restart
4. All that appears in the screen is a list of files in Command prompt style when you
try to go to safe mode.
a. Sound on/off error
b. Safe mode doesn’t work

These happen because of misplaced web pages in the server of the website itself, or
may be due to connection problems.
a. Application errors
b. Browser status codes
c. Device manager errors

your motherboard. These errors happen when you press the power button to turn on
the computer.

8. These errors are due to corrupted hardware, especially RAM module malfunction
and bad sectors on hard disks. They can be hard to resolve at times.

due to glitches in the program code itself. The solution for these errors is to update
the program to its latest version.
a. Application errors
b. Stop errors
c. Device manager errors

Check your answer using the key to corrections.

Were you able to get all the correct answers? If yes, then that means you
already know much about our topic in this module.

If not, it is alright. Because that means you will learn something new from
this module.

Lesson
Types of Computer System
1 Errors
There are several computer system errors from the time you open up the computer
until the time you reach the stand by window. Once you get to view the standby
window, that means the boot process has no error.

In this module, you will learn all about Computer System Errors and how to solve
them.

What’s In

Before we proceed to our topic, let us look back at the previous lesson. This will test
if you remember what you learned about the lesson you have finished.

Activity 1: What Am I

Identify the following. Write AS for anti-static device, PS for power surge protectors
and PE for personal equipment. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Check your answers from the key to correction.

Did you get them all correct? Great job!

Notes to the Teacher

This module will help guide the students in becoming familiar with Personal Protective
Equipment and its importance in ensuring safety while working with computers.

Activity 2: Unscramble Us

Unscramble the set of letters below to form words related to the lesson.

STEMYS TOPOUU RORRE

GLOADNI CLATIPPAION
TRIMUNE WEBSORR OCED
VICEDE NAMAREG

Check your answer using the key to corrections.

Were you able to decode all of them? Well done! Let us now proceed to our
discussion.

What is It

Here are the different computer system errors you may encounter.

1. No video output

When you open the computer, nothing shows up in the screen and the LED indicator
of the monitor is flashing in yellow color.

2. No video output

When you open the computer, nothing shows up in the screen and the LED indicator
of the monitor is in steady orange color.

3. Does not Boot

When you turn on the computer, it will show the processor brand and/or the
motherboard brand but suddenly stops. Usually, this type of error results to repeated
system restart.

5
Q3_TLE(CHS)9_ Module 2
4. Never Ending Loading of Operating system

The computer starts, then boots. But, when the operating system loads, it suddenly
stops and waiting for it to load may take you a lifetime.

5. Lots of popup windows showing on standby mode

This also occurs even if you try to disconnect the computer from the internet. This is
called the aftershock virus, which will proceed running even if there is no internet
connection.

6. A Lot of hardware installation windows appear

This occurs even if you try to install the hardware. It will happen again when you
restart the computer.

7. Safe mode doesn't work

All that appears in the screen is a list of files in Command prompt style when you
try to go to safe mode.

8. Keyboard and mouse system restart

This will occur only in standby mode. The system will automatically restart when you
move the mouse or encode something. The worst part of it is that it will delete a file
randomly.

9. Sound on/off error

When the operating system loads, a loading sound can be heard, but suddenly stops.
No sound will be heard when you try to play an audio file.

10. Application causes system to restart

Same as the mouse error, a program takes the whole screen when opened, like for
example a game and/or a program application. It will cause a system restart when it
is closed.

6
Q3_TLE(CHS)9_ Module 2
Apart from these, computers can also undergo different Operating System (OS)
errors. OS errors can be classified into various categories, such as:

1. System errors

System errors are quite dangerous types of errors that can be present on a computer.
These errors are caused by computer hardware component malfunction, operating
system module corruption, and the like.

2. Runtime errors

Runtime errors are caused by corruption or malfunction of computer system files or

software. Most runtime errors cause the application to shut down. However, more
serious runtime errors may cause an unstable or unresponsive system, leaving no
possible option but to click the RESET button.

3. Stop errors

Stop errors are due to corrupted hardware, especially RAM module malfunction and
bad sectors on hard disks. Stop errors can be hard to resolve at times.

4. Device Manager Errors

Device Manager errors are commonly caused by malfunctioning hardware

components or corrupted driver files. In case of the latter cause, the solution is
simply by reinstalling or updating the drivers. However, for the former cause, the
solution can often be by hardware component replacement.

5. POST code errors

POST code errors are due to malfunctioning hardware components. These are
characterized by short beep sounds from the tiny internal speaker of your
motherboard. POST code errors happen when you press the power button to turn on
the computer.

6. Application errors

Application errors can happen at any point of time. These are caused by applications
while they are running. These are commonly due to glitches in the program code
itself. The solution for these errors is to update the program to its latest version.

7. Browser Status Codes

Browser Status codes are caused by problems in the browsers when trying to access
a website. These happen because of misplaced web pages in the server of the website
itself, or may be due to connection problems.
