DAY 1
MINI-LESSON

Hello! Are you all set to learn?

Today, you will be learning about
portable bootable devices. But have
you heard the word portable before?
What about the word bootable? If not,
then sit back and relax as I take you to
a ride of fun-learning.

What does the word portable mean? Have

you heard of portable devices like laptop and DVD?
Portable means a lighter version of an object that
can be easily carried by hand. Now, can you identify
objects that can be defined as portable?
What about the word bootable? Bootable is used to define a device
that contains a software required to boot a computer. The word boot in
computer science means start.
A boot device is a kind of hardware that reads or holds the file being
required to start the computer. Example of bootable devices are floppy
disk drive, CD-ROM drive, DVD drive and flash drive. However, unless
the necessary boot files are stored on the drive, diskette or disc, the
computer cannot boot from that device.
The most used boot device or boot drive is the hard drive. When
an operating system, such as Microsoft Windows, is installed onto the
hard drive, it copies the boot files and drivers required to load Windows
onto the computer. When installing a new operating system,
troubleshooting the computer, or booting from another drive (e.g., CD-
ROM drive), a bootable disc or setup disc is inserted into the drive. If
the boot sequence is set up correctly in CMOS setup and the bootable
disc is in the computer, it will load from the disc.
In installing operating system, bootable CD-ROM drive and DVD
drive are common devices used that read OS installer from CD ROM or
DVD. However, most users nowadays prefer netbook than laptop
considering its size and weight. But netbooks do not have built-in drives
when formatting is necessary. With this flash disk is of help.

DAY 2
MINI-LESSON

Hey! How are you today? Have you

learned something about yesterday’s
topic? Good! I hope you are all set to
jump to our next lesson which has
something to do with booting-up your
computer system.

Have you wondered what happens when a

computer system boots-up? What happens the
moment you click the start button of your PC or
Laptop? Boot sequence is the order in which a
computer searches for nonvolatile data storage
devices containing program code to load the
operating system. Before boot sequence, Power-On
Self-Test (POST) happens.
Regardless of what operating system your computer has, POST
works with or without it. It is because BIOS holds the instruction for POST.
POST checks all connected hardware devices like keyboard,
mouse, processor, storage devices and memory of which are properly
functioning. When certain problems are encountered upon checking, you
will be prompted with a POST codes like flashing LEDs, beep codes or a
POST error message on screen.
After a successful POST, BIOS checks from the boot order options
as to which device (hard disk, optical disk, etc) contains the OS to fully
start the computer system. This boot order options is accessible through
BIOS Setup. To access Boot Order or Boot Priority Options, follow the
steps below:
1. Click Start Button of your computer to boot-up.
2. Click F2 or DEL to open BIOS Set-up (This depends on the unit
of your computer.)
3. Select Boot tab.
4. Set Boot Priority (Follow the instructions on how set given
options).
5. Save and Exit.

4

statement is wrong. If your answer is false, supply the correct word or phrase
to make the statement correct.

1. POST does not work without OS.

2. BIOS checks from the boot order options after POST is
unsuccessful.
3. BIOS holds the instructions for POST.
4. POST checks all software.
5. Boot order option is accessible through BIOS Setup
