This lesson teaches the learner to be aware on the safety precautions when
working with the network.
What’s New
You are now ready to explore in configuring computer systems and networks.
However, you need to bear in mind first the safety procedures related to networks.
Your knowledge on the basic safety procedures below will help you understand
better the safety precautions in configuring computer systems and networks.
What Is It
Read the labels on the ladder and follow the safety instructions.
1
Never stand on the top rung of the ladder. You might be out of balance and fall.
Make sure that people in the area know you are working there. Secure the area
with caution tape or safety cones.
When you are using a ladder that leans up against a wall, follow the instructions
written on the ladder and let someone hold the ladder to help in keeping it
steady.
When working with cables, strictly follow these safety rules to avoid accident
especially in handling some tools:
Make sure that the tools you are using are in good working condition.
Watch what you are doing and take your time.
Make sure that you do not cut yourself or place anyone in danger.
Always wear safety glasses when cutting, stripping, or splicing cables of any
kind. Tiny fragments can injure your eyes.
Wear gloves whenever possible and dispose any waste properly.
Use your common sense when installing cables and fixing network problems.
Ask somebody to assist you when needed.
Fiber-Optic Safety
Dangerous chemicals - The solvents and glues used with fiber optics are
dangerous. You should handle them with extra care. Follow the instructions on the
proper use of chemicals and its safety measures in case there is an emergency.
Tools with sharp edges - When working with any tool, safety should always
be your first priority. The tools used for working with fiber optics have sharp cutting
surfaces that are used to scribe glass. Take extra careful to avoid serious injury or
even death.
Light which you cannot see and can burn your eyes - Protect your eyes
from harmful light that may be in the fiber-optic strands. This light is invisible that can
damage the eyes before you can feel it.
Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct / proper words. Choose your answers
from the group of words in the box. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.

1. Installing _______ cables, whether copper or fiber optic, can be _______ .
2. A safe work _______ is clean, _______ and well-lit.
3. Follow _______ safety guidelines to prevent cuts, burns, electrical _______
and damage to eyesight.
4. Follow the safety guidelines to _______ equipment and _______ .

Assessment
True or False
Directions: Write T if the statement is correct and F if it is not. Write your answers
on a separate sheet of paper or activity notebook.
___1. Installing network cables, whether copper or fiber optic, can be dangerous.
___2. You should wear clothing such as mini skirts, short sleeved shirt when working
with toxic materials.
___3. The workplace should be clean, well-organized and has proper lightings.
___4. Wear safety glasses if possible.
___5. Never stand on the top rung of the ladder. You could easily lose your balance
and fall.
___6. No one should know that you are working in the area.
___7. Cordon off the area with caution tape or safety cones.
___8. Wear gloves whenever possible and dispose any waste properly.
___9. You should handle solvents and glues used with fiber optics with utmost care.
___10. Keep your working tools in a safe place.
4
___11. The process of cutting and trimming the strands of fiber-optic cables can
produce tiny fragments of glass that can penetrate your eyes.
___12. You should keep the work area full of clutter.
___13. Use tape to pick up small fragments and dispose them off properly.
___14.Use special detectors to help you tell if a fiber is energized.
___15. Make it sure that fire extinguisher and first aid kit be available in a workplace.

Networking Devices, Media
2 and Connectors
What’s New
What Is It
1. Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) - is the cable that has two or four pairs of
wires that rely solely on the cancellation effect created by the twisted-wire
pairs that limit signal degradation affected by electromagnetic interface
(EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI).
5
2. Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) - Each pair of wire is wrapped in metallic
foil to better shield the wires from noise. STP reduces electrical noise from
within the cable.
Category Rating
UTP categories are based on the number of wires in the cable and the
number of twist in those wires.
In Category 3, wires are used for telephone systems and Ethernet LAN
with 10 Mega byte per second (Mbps).
Category 5 and Category 5e have four pairs of wires with a
transmission rate of 100 Mbps and the most common network cables
used between Category 5 and 5e. These have more twists per foot.
Fiber Optic Cable is made of glasss with more optical fibers enclosed in
sheath and is not affected by EMI or RFI.
1. Multimode is the cable that has a thicker core than single-mode cable.
This uses simpler light sources such as Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and
works well over distances of a few kilometers or less.
2. Single-mode has a very thin core and harder to make. It uses laser as a
light source and can transmit signals to more kilometers with ease.

4 Peer-to-Peer Network
What’s New
What Is It
Peer-to-Peer-Network
In a peer-to-peer network, devices are connected directly to each other
without any additional networking devices between them. In this type of network,
each device has equivalent capabilities and responsibilities. Individual users are
responsible for their own resources and can decide which data and devices to share.
This network has no central point of control or administrator.

1. Make sure both systems have Network Interface Cards (NICS) installed
and are using the proper cables.
2. PCs with Windows XP, use home networking wizard.
A. Click Start and then Control Panel.
B. Select Network and Internet Connections.
C. Double-click Network Setup Wizard and follow the On-Screen
Instructions.
6. In the subnet mask field enter: 255.255.255.0. All PCs on the same
network use the same subnet mask. Click the Ok button to finish
configuration and close the Local Area Connection Properties windows.
NOTE: The Domain Name System (DNS) is optional. If you have a DNS
system and your connected to ISP, you can input an IP address
that came from the DNS server.
7. Click the Computer Name tab and click the Change button.
8. Enter a name that describes the PC in the Computer Description field.
For example: KIDSPC1, MOMSPC2, or WORKPC3.
9. Enter the workgroup name for your network. Use the same workgroup
name for all PCs on the network. Spelling is important in this step.
10. Repeat these steps for every PC in the network.
11. Wait two minutes after Windows opens on all PCs and then double-click
the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop. If all went well, you
should see all the PC names on the network when files and folders are
being shared. If you do not see them, press F5 to refresh the screen.
12. If after refreshing the network window the other PCs still do not appear,
check the firewall settings that may be interfering with the communication.
If you are going to work with Windows 7 operating system, the following
procedures are used to set up a peer-to-peer network:
