OHS Procedures in Network
1 Maintenance

Safety guidelines help protect individuals from accident and injury. They also
help to protect equipment from damage. Some of these guidelines are designed to
protect the environment from contamination caused by improperly discarded
materials.

General Safety

Follow the basic safety guidelines to prevent cuts, burns, electrical shock, and
damage to eyesight. As a best practice, make sure that a fire extinguisher and first
aid kit are available in case of fire or injury.

Here are some of the basic safety precautions to use when working on a
computer systems and network:

• Remove your watch and jewelry and secure loose clothing.

• Turn off the power and unplug equipment before performing service.
• Cover sharp edges inside the computer case with tape.
• Never open a power supply.
• Do not touch areas in printers that are hot or that use high voltage.
• Know where the fire extinguisher is located and how to use it.
• Keep food and drinks out of your workspace.
• Keep your workspace clean and free of clutter.
• Bend your knees when lifting heavy objects to avoid injuring your back.

Cable, Cable Cutters, and Cable-Cutting Safety Hazards

All levels of technicians should know the hazards before working with network
cables and equipment. This section describes the safety hazards of working with
copper cables, which, like fiber-optic cables, can be dangerous to handle.

1. When handling cable, always wear eye protection. Never touch the ends of any
type of cable to bare skin.

2. When you cut copper cable, the small copper strands can puncture your skin
or cut you. The small pieces that come off after cables are cut often fly into
the air. Remember to always wear safety glasses when cutting any type of
cable.

3. The cutting and crimping tools used to repair set of terminate copper cables
can be dangerous if not used properly. Read the instructions that come with
the tool. Practice using the tool on scrap cable, and ask an experienced
installer for help if you need it.

4. Remember that copper cable conducts electricity. A faulty equipment, static

electricity, or lightning can energize even a disconnected cable. If in doubt,
test the cable you are working on with a simple voltage detector before
touching it.

Electrical Safety

Electric current from power, telephone, and communication cables can be

hazardous. To avoid personal injury or equipment damage, disconnect the attached
power cords, telecommunications systems, networks and modems before you open
the server/ workstation covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and
configuration procedure.

Disconnect all power when:

• Performing a mechanical inspection

• Working near power supplies

 • Removing or installing main units
• Before starting the work on the machine, unplug the power cord.
• Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit. First, check
that it has been powered-off.
• Always look carefully for possible hazards in your work.
• Moist floors
• Non-grounded power extension cables
• Power surges.

If an electrical accident occurs:

• Switch off power.
• Send another person to get medical aid.

Fire Safety

Follow the fire safety guidelines to protect lives, structures, and equipment. To
avoid an electrical shock and to prevent damage to the computer, turn off and unplug
the computer before beginning a repair.

Fire can spread rapidly and be very costly. Proper use of a fire extinguisher can
prevent a small fire from getting out of control. When working with computer
components, be aware of the possibility of an accidental fire and know how to react.
Be alert for odors emitting from computers and electronic devices. When electronic
components overheat or short out, they emit a burning odor.

2 Equipment (PPE)

How can we distinguish the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

for the job? How to properly use PPE in order to prevent accidents at work?

Defining Hazards

What is a hazard? A hazard is anything that produces adverse effects on

anyone. Examples of hazards are slippery floors, falling objects, chemicals and many
more.

What do you think that make these occurrences hazardous? Unsafe/ unhealthy
acts bring about unsafe/ unhealthy conditions causing hazards in the workplace.
Although some hazards are intrinsic in nature or force majeure, a human hand is still
behind most of the hazards we now encounter.

Controlling Hazards

There are three methods in controlling hazards: engineering, administrative and

PPE.

1. Engineering method - This is the application of engineering technology to

control hazards. An example is machine guarding which prevents anyone from
coming in contact with moving parts of a machine during the operation. Other
examples are installation of safety devices like emergency stop, limit, grab-wire
and photo electric switches. These prevent accidents in case of improper work
practices.
2. Administrative method – This aims to minimize the exposure of humans to
workplace hazards and employs administrative approaches such as rotation
and shifting.
3. PPE – These are considered as the last line of defense. These devices provide
limited protection to the ones using them.

Selecting the Proper PPE

In selecting the proper protector, consideration should be given to the kind and
degree of hazard. Where a choice of protectors is given and the degree of protection
required is not an important issue, worker’s comfort may be a deciding factor. Another
is contacting the PPE supplier. Manufacturers and distributors do not just help the
selection of the most useful equipment, but can give valuable aid in fit-sizing, cleaning,
care and storage.

Uses of PPE

The following are the functions and uses of PPE:

1. Head Protection - It is used when there are threats on falling objects and
electrocution.

2. Eye Protection - A goggle is a device that provides eye protection from hazards
caused by: flying particles, sparks, light radiation, splashes, and gases.

3. Face Shields - Face shields should only be used as eye and face protection in
areas where splashing or dusts, rather than impact resistance is the problem.
In the case of grinding operations (plus other operations), a face shield is only
secondary protection to other protective devices, such as safety goggles.

4. Ear Protection - This is used when there is excessive noise - noise exceeding
85-90 dB or more on eight-hour exposure. Examples: ear plug, ear muffs, and
canal caps.

5. Respiratory Protection - Respiratory protection is required when engineering

improvements and administrative controls cannot eliminate risk. Engineering
controls include isolation of the source of contaminants, design process or
procedural changes, etc. Administrative controls on the other hand include
monitoring, limiting worker exposure, training and education, etc.

6. Hand and Arm Protection - This is used when there are hazards like harmful
substances that can be absorbed by the skin, severe cuts or lacerations, severe
abrasions, chemical burns, thermal burns, and temperature extremes.

7. Foot and Leg Protection - It is used for the following hazards: falling or rolling
objects, sharp objects, hot surfaces, wet, slippery surfaces, and electricity.
Examples are:
• Conductive Shoes - protect against the buildup of static electricity or
equalize the electrical potential between personnel and the ground.
• Electrical Hazard Safety Shoes - are non-conductive and protect against
open circuits of 600 volts or less under dry conditions.

8. Fall Protection - prevents you from fall. Examples are: travel restraint system,
fall arrest system, and lifelines.

9. Torso/ Full Body Protection - is used when there are threats in a form of bodily
injury. Workplace hazards that can cause bodily injury are: intense heat,
splashes of hot metals and other hot liquids, impact from tools, machinery, and
other materials, cuts, hazardous chemicals, contact with potentially infectious
materials, like blood and radiation.
