Introductory Message

Welcome to the (Technology and Livelihood Education Grade 9) Self-Learning


Module on (OHS, Safety Procedure and Personal Protective Equipment)!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the

opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You

LESSON

Safety Procedure

Hand tools are used every day in many forms of jobs. They
make work simpler, easier and more productive. However,
many students also fail to see the hazards that these tools
can pose. This lesson will teach you how injuries can be
considerably minimized. It will also discuss the different
dangers associated with particular types of tools.
Safety Requirements

For your protection, observe the following safety requirements:

 Follow all cautions, warnings, and instructions marked on the equipment.


 Ensure that the voltage and frequency levels of the power outlet are
compatible with the electrical rating labels on the system.
 Use properly grounded power outlets

Please observe the following safety criteria for your protection:

Personal Protective Equipment

Personal safety

Whenever you perform a workshop task, you must use personal protective clothing
and equipment (PPE) that is suitable to the task and that complies with your local
safety regulations and policies. This may include, among other things:

- Do not use flammable cleaners or water in electrical equipment.


- Make sure you keep designated walkways free from any obstructions.
- Always wear protective clothing and appropriate safety equipment.
- Make sure you understand and obey both legislative and personal safety
protocols while conducting the following activities.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS

It refers to legislation, policies, procedures and activities that are intended to be


implemented to protect the health, safety and welfare of all people at the workplace.

COMMON OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS

Don't work on your own so that someone


can take care of you in case of an
emergency.
Always turn off and unplug your computer
before working on it.

Remove any liquid from your work area to


prevent electrocuting or accidental harm to
computer components.

Be cautious with tools that can cause short


circuits.

Always ground or discharge yourself before


touching any part of your device.

 Don't use excessive force if things don't slip


 into place.
Clean the area before and after use to ensure
sanitation and avoid accidents.

Hold the components on the edges and do


not touch the part of the Integrated Circuit
(IC).

Always wear personal protective equipment


(PPE) in accordance with the organization's
OHS procedures and practices.

Make sure that the pins are properly aligned


when connecting a cable connector.
Contingency measures during workplace
accidents, fire and other emergencies are
recognized.

Use a brush, compressed air or blower to


clean your computer system.

CAUTION Some of the tools are magnetized. When operating with electronic
devices, be sure that the tools you use have not been magnetized. Magnetic fields
may be harmful to data stored in magnetic media. Check the tool by touching
the tool with a screw. If the screw is attracted to the tool, do not use the tool.
Phillips-Head Screwdriver
CAUTION Use a Phillips-head screwdriver with crosshead screws. Do not use this
type of screwdriver to puncture anything. This will damage the head of the
screwdriver.
Component Retrieving Tools
CAUTION Needle-nose pliers and tweezers may be used to position and retrieve
pieces that may be difficult to reach with your fingertips. There are also tools
called part retrievers that have been specifically developed for this task. When
using these materials, do not scratch or touch any of the components.
