Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
II
CONTENT STANDARD The learners demonstrate an understanding
of concepts and principles in setting up
computer networks.
1
INTRODUCTION
In this module, you will be able to identify the process of configuring the client
device system setting which includes setting time and date, setting up computer name,
and installing network driver. You will also be able to configure Local Area Network
(LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) which include the presentation of the materials
and equipment needed to configure, and the different processes in configuration and
setting up these networks.
Through these configurations, you can specify settings that are needed and
required for the computer to function and perform better. You will also understand how
to build these networks, how to execute these steps, and recognize their importance.

Configuration of Client Device Systems
Settings, LAN, and WAN
To be acquainted with the terminologies used in this module, we will be
unlocking terms to provide the meaning of these terms and not only rely on how the
words are used in the context.
In the configuration process, some terms are uncommon and not usually used
in other topics. To fully grasp its idea, a configuration is changing the system’s default
settings to the client’s preference. These settings are essential to be configured to fully
engage and use the computer to what it is designed for and to perform better.
UNLOCKING OF TERMS

IPv4 It’s the fourth version of the internet protocol. IP, which
stands for internet protocol, is the internet’s principal set of
rules for communications. It defines IP addresses in a 32-
bit format, which looks like 123.123.123.123.
Local Area Network A group of computers and peripheral devices that share a
(LAN) common communications line.

Directions: Read each statement below carefully. On the space provided before each
item number, write a letter “T” if you think the statement is TRUE,
otherwise, write the letter “F”.
_____3. Network topology is the way a network is arranged, including the physical or
the logical description of how links and nodes are set up to relate to each
other.
_____5. IP addresses are required by any network adapter on any computer that
needs to connect to the Internet or another computer.

ABSTRACTION
On the other hand, network configuration is also necessary to support the flow
of traffic within the network, its operations, and controls especially in sharing,
accessing, and storing data in a centralized location, and improve the network stability.
With proper configuration, the network will be stable regardless of the devices
connected to it.
11
Step 2: Once you open the
clock settings, you can turn
off “Set time automatically” to
set the time manually.
12
Step 4: Change the date and time and
to bring the changes into effect, click
“Change”.
13
Step 3: In the “Computer name” box, you may now
change the name. If you have a local network with
many computers on it, you may change the name of
it in the “Workgroup” box. Click the “OK” button after
changing the name.
Step 1: Download the Driver Pack Solution. For example, Driver Pack Solution
2019. You can also download an offline version.
14
Step 3: Run the Driver Pack Solution to install the missing drivers.
Step 4: In the Drivers tab, you can choose the missing drivers and the drivers
to be updated especially the Network Driver. After identifying the driver/drivers,
click “Install all” to update and install all drivers selected.
Step 5: In some cases, a message box will pop up telling you to restart your
computer after the installation. If there will be no message box, you have to
manually restart your computer. After restarting, check if you can now connect
to a network and you are good to go.
15
3.2. CONFIGURE NETWORK SETTINGS
After the installation, you need now to configure your network for you to connect
to a network.
16
Step 2. Locate the folder of the installer
and run the setup. Just wait until the
installation will be finished.
Step 1. You need to have the AVAST installer. You can download it on their
website or buy a licensed product.
Step 2. If you already have the
installer, run and wait until the
installation is finished.
17
II. LOCAL AREA NETWORK
18
5. RESET THE ROUTER
If all the devices are connected using the Ethernet cable, you need now to reset
the router. In resetting your router, click and hold the small button at the back of the
router until all the lights in the router will illuminate. It will probably take about 5-10
seconds before the lights will illuminate and the router will be restarted.
19
e. The DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol) server of your router will provide the
TCP/IP configuration for all the PCs in your
network. Go to the DHCP tab, click “Enable” and
define the starting and ending IP Addresses to
automatically provide the devices connected to
your router their IP addresses. For example,
your starting IP Address is 192.168.1.100 and
your ending IP Address is 192.168.1.199. When
you save this setting, the expected IP addresses of your devices when you check on
them should be in the range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199. This is the easiest
way to establish a LAN connection for your network. If you wish to establish a
connection manually, you can disable the DHCP.
Wide Area Network (WAN) is different from Local Area Network (LAN) but is
related to it. When a network spans over a large distance, a local area network cannot
be used which is why we need a wide area network (WAN). The communication
established using leased telephone lines, satellite links, and similar channels. WAN
circuits and leased lines are
provided by service providers.
WAN is cheaper and more
efficient to use the phone
network for the link. In other
words, a WAN is formed when
you connect multiple LANs that
are geographically far apart.
Big companies, schools, and even government agencies are using WAN to
carry out data and send it to the other network across different areas. With this,
businesses carry out daily functions regardless of location.
For example, a company that is expanding and has different offices in areas
that are geographically far should contact a service provider that is present in all areas
where their offices are located and see if what type of WAN services can be offered.
The company needs to pay the service
provider fees to connect remote sites.
The service provider will access your
area and will install the necessary
hardware and circuits needed to build a
WAN and they will provide a link for it.
WAN services providers include MPLS
network, telephone company, cable
20
company, and satellite service provider provides a link to interconnect remote sites to
send data from one office to the other. Without the WANs, LANs will be a series of
isolated networks because it can only cater to small geographical areas.
After the data leaves the customer’s location, it arrives at the service provider’s
central office (CO). These are like a distribution center sending data to other COs
along the path to its final destination.
