Let’s Elaborate

A computer network is a group of computers linked to each other that enables the
computer to communicate with another computer and share their resources, data, and
applications. The most common resource shared today is connection to the Internet. Other
shared resources can include a printer or a file server. The internet itself can be considered
a computer network. Network devices connect a collection of hosts on a computer network.
Any device that sends or receives information in the network is counted as host. Devices that
are connected to the host such as printers, scanner and the like are called peripherals. Numerous
devices could be connected to the network.

4
Benefits of Computer Networking
1. Fewer peripherals are required
Multiple computers or hosts are able to access peripherals such as printer or a scanner
which reduces the need to have a single peripheral host.

2. Increased communication capabilities

Different collaboration tools are provided by the network for communication between
users.

3. Prevention of file duplication and corruption

A server manages the network resources, stores data in a centralized storage and shares
data with users who are permitted to access data. A document tracking software may be used
to prevent users from making changes to files that are currently accessed by other users or from
overwriting of files.

4. Lower-cost licensing
Purchasing an application license for every computer on the network may be costly.
Numerous software vendors offer licensing for networks thus enabling all the users on the
network to use application for a single fee.

5. Centralized administration
Reduces the amount of manpower required to manage data on the network therefore
reducing time and cost for the company. A single administrator could control the devices, data
and restriction of the users on the network. A centralized data storage location would make it
easier to back up data as well.

6. Resource conservation
In order to prevent a single host from being overloaded with processor tasks, data
processing may be distributed across multiple hosts on a network.

Types of Network
1. Local Area Network (LAN) – It is a group of
interconnected devices under a single administrative
control group that governs the security and access
control policies enforced on the network. A LAN is
confined to a single room, building or group of building.
Typically, LAN’s use wired connections to link
computers to each other and to a variety of peripheral
devices such as printer.

5
2. Metropolitan Area Network – It covers
Hospital LAN
larger area by connections LANs to a larger
network of computer. In metropolitan area
network various local area networks are
Factory LAN
connected with each other through telephone MAN University LAN

lines. The size of metropolitan area network

is larger than local area network and smaller
School LAN
that WANs (Wide Area Network), a MAN
covers the larger area of a city or town.

3. Wide Area Network – It is a network that

connects two or more local area network which are
geographically separated locations, through the use
of Telecommunication Service Provider (TSP). A
WAN connects different smaller network, including
LAN and metro area network (MAN). This ensures
that computers and users in one location can
communicate with computers and users in other
locations. WANs are similar to banking system
where hundreds of branches in different cities are
connected with each other in order to share their official data. Typically, TCP/IP is the protocol
used for a WAN in combination with devices such as routers, switches, firewalls and modem.

4. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) – It is a local

area network that uses wireless devices to send and receive
data through radio waves. It links two or more devices
using wireless communication to form a local area
network within a limited area such as a home, school,
computer laboratory, campus or office building.
Moreover, WLAN allows devices to connect and
communicate wirelessly. Unlike a traditional wired LAN,
in which devices communicate over ethernet cables,
devices on a WLAN communicate via Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that allows computer and other devices to
communicate over wireless signal.

6
5. Peer-to-Peer Network – It is a type of network
where the host are directly connected to one another
without the use of any networking devices. P2P
network is created when to or more PCs are connected
and share resources without going through a separate
server computer. P2P can be both server and client.

6. Client Server – It is a network where the server Client 2 Client 3

manages data transmission and the client would
have to first make a request from the server when
data is required. It is a specific type of online
network comprised of a single central computer
acting as a server that directs multiple other
computers, which referred as the clients. By Client 1 Client 4
Server
accessing the server, clients are then able to reach
shared files and information saved on the serving
computer.

10
Let’s Elaborate

Network Media
It refers to the communication channels used to interconnect nodes on a computer
network. It is also refers to the actual path over which an electrical signal travels as it moves
from one component to another. There are common types of network media, including twisted
pair cable, co-axial cable, fiber-optic cable used in wired networks and radio waves used in
wireless data communication network.

Twisted Pair Cable – It is a type of cabling that is used for telephone communication and most
Ethernet networks.

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cable

combines the techniques of
shielding, cancellation and wire
twisting. Each pair of wires is
wrapped in metallic foil.

Features of STP Cable:

Speed 10 to 100 mbps

Average cost per node Moderate expensive
Media and connector size Medium to Large
Maximum cable length 100 m (short)

Unshielded Twisted Pair is

most commonly used in
computer networking. Each of
eight individual copper wire in
UTP cable is covered by an
insulating material.

11
Features of UTP Cable:

Speed 10 to 100 mbps

Average cost per node Least expensive
Media and connector size Small
Maximum cable length 100 m (short)

Category 5 - Can transmit data at speeds up to 100 Mbps.

Category 5e – Used in networks running at speeds up to 1000 Mbps (1Gbps)
Category 6 – It consists of 24 pair American Wire Gauge (AWG) copper wires. Currently the fastest
standard UTP. It speeds up to 10 Gbps.

Coaxial Cable – It is a cable used in transmission of video, communications and audio. The
kind of copper cable used by cable TV companies between community antenna user homes and
business.
braided plastic copper
copper insulation conductor
outer jacket
shielding

Features of Coaxial Cable:

Speed 10 to 100 mbps

Average cost per node Inexpensive
Media and connector size Medium
Maximum cable length 500 m (Medium)
Fiber Optic Cable – It is a cable that contains optical fibers (usually glass) coated in plastic that
are used to send data by pulses of light. They are designed to long-distance, high performance
data networking and telecommunications. Fiber optic cables provide higher bandwidth and
transmit data over longer distances.

12
Features of Fiber Optic Cable:

Speed More than 1Gbps

Average cost per node Expensive
Media and connector size Small
Maximum cable length More than 10km for single
mode; up to 2 km for multi
mode

Wireless Communication – It uses radio frequencies or

Infrared waves to transmit data between devices on a LAN.
For a wireless LANs, a key component is the wireless hub,
access point, used for signal distribution. Wireless
communications have enabled the connection of billions of
people to the Internet so that they can reap the benefits of
today’s digital economy. Similarly, agreed standards for
mobile phones allow people to use their devices everywhere
in the world

Common applications of wireless data communication:

▪ Accessing the Internet using cellular phones
▪ Establishing a home or business Internet connection
via satellite
▪ Beaming data between two hand-held computing devices (e.g transferring of data
using ShareIt app via hotspot)
▪ Using a wireless keyboard and mouse for PC

The choice of media type will affect the type of NICs installed, the speed of the network, and
the capability of the network to meet future needs.
