Information Sheet 1.1-1

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (OHS)
Learning Objective: after reading this information sheet, you must be able to:

1.) Explain the Occupational Health and Safety in your computer related works including dealing with
electrical components of a computer.

INTRODUCTION:

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) also commonly referred to as Occupational Health and
Safety (OHS) or Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) is an area concerned with the safety, health
and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. The goals of occupational safety and health
programs include to foster a safe and healthy work environment. OHS may also protect co-workers,
family members, employers, customers, and many others who might be affected by the workplace
environment. In the United States the term occupational health and safety is referred to as occupational
health and occupational and non-occupational safety and includes safety for activities outside of work.

Occupational Health and Safety can be important for moral, legal, and financial reasons because
Good OHS practices can also reduce worker injury and illness related costs, including medical care, sick
leave and disability benefit costs.

What is OHS and why is it necessary?

OHS or OH&S stands for Occupational Health and Safety, it is a cross disciplinary area concerned with
protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment.

OHS relating to Installing computer systems and networks:

 Safety on handling computer components and devices

 Safety on connecting power connectors
 Check the proper voltage for every device.
 Check the electrical connection for faulty wirings.
 Use power surge protector or suppressor.
 Use proper screw and screwdrivers for each component.
 Hold CPU components and CD‟s/DVD‟s on its edges or in its bracket.
 Put extra care in dismantling and returning the IO shield.

Safety Precautions Dealing with Electrical Components of Computer

1.) Disconnect all power before:

 Performing a hardware inspections
 Attempt directly to internal and external computer components
 Working power supply
 Removing or installing main units

2.) Before starting work, unplug the power cord.

3.) Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit. First, check that it has been
powered-off.

4.) Always look carefully for possible hazards in your work

 Moist floors
 Non-grounded power extension cables
 Power surges

5.) Discharge static electricity

6.) If an electrical accident occurs:

 Use caution
 Switch off power
 Send another person to get medical aid
Safety Inspection Guide

These steps will help you to identify potentially unsafe conditions of the hardware components:

 Check exterior covers for damage (loose, broken, or sharp edges)  Power-off computer.
Disconnect the power cord.
 The power cord should be the appropriate type.
 Insulation on the power cord must not be frayed or worn out.
 Remove the cover.
 Check for any obvious alteration. Use good judgment as to the safety of any alterations.
 Check for worn out, frayed or pinched cables.
 Check that the power-supply cover fasteners (screws or rivets) have not been removed or
tampered with.

OHS for effective computer troubleshooting

Follow the three most important things below:

o What you wear might save you!

o Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) is not your best friend!
o Working Safely with Electricity!

Computer Repair Safety Precautions!

Please take a few minutes to read about the safety precautions to take before opening your
computer and attempting to repair.
Electrical Hazards. UNPLUG THE COMPUTER and wait a few minutes before opening the computer
and keep it unplugged at any time you are working on the hardware! This will ensure that the
capacitors are empty or only partially charged avoiding electrical shocks that can damage your
computer
Ensure that the power outlets are properly grounded and that all equipment electrical wires are in
good condition and provide proper grounding to avoid charge build up.
Avoid wearing loose jewellery or other conductive objects, such as rings and watches with metal
bands, whenever you work around electrical equipment.
The energy stored in a monitor or computer power supply is high enough to be dangerous. Even
when the electricity is disconnected, capacitors in the monitor and power supply can hold a harmful
amount of electrical charge.
Never open a power supply case or monitor unless you’re experienced working with electricity.
Touch a large piece of metal to Ground yourself! Your computer is very sensitive to static electricity,
and you could burn it if you do not follow this step!
Hardware repair or replacement manipulation.
Repairing your computer is rather easy when you know what you are doing. By that I mean you don't
need any other tool than a screw driver and the parts are easy to reach and manipulate (compare to
repairing a car).
The hardware itself cannot be repaired if burnt. With the exception of the Power Supply and hard
Drive, I would be very careful changing the parts if burnt. If anything else is damaged in your
computer, you risk burning the new part.
I say that from experience. I burnt a New Mother Board once by installing damaged RAM on it, to
test the RAM. Instead try to replace the part with a cheap old/used part to see if everything works
properly before replacing the part with a high performance new part.
Make sure to follow this Computer Repair Flowchart systematically to avoid any mistake that would
cost you time and money or even worst!
Always put safety first even when repairing your computer!
