Self-Learning Module 12
Title: Basic Elements of
Technical Drawing:
Block Diagram and Layout Plans
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education 9 Self-Learning Module

on Computer Systems Servicing!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through mayor, Honorable
Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12
Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing
this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education Self-Learning Module

on Computer Systems Servicing!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

operations such as yes/no
question or true/false.

2. B. It represents a single step

or a whole sub-process
within a bigger process.

symbols within the
flowchart.

LESSON

Technical drawing is important for communicating thoughts in industry and

engineering. To make the drawings easier to understand, individuals utilize familiar
symbols, viewpoints, units of measurement, notation systems, visual styles, and
page format. Together, such practices constitute a visual language and help to
guarantee that the drawing is unambiguous and generally easy to understand.
What is a Block Diagram?
A Block Diagram is a drawing illustration of a system in which the central
parts or functions are represented by blocks associated by lines that show the
relationships between subsequent blocks.
Unlike Schematic Diagram, Block Diagrams are typically utilized for higher
level and less detailed descriptions. These are intended to clarify overall concepts
without concern for the subtle elements of implementation compare with the
schematic diagrams and layout diagrams. It is similar to a highway map of an entire
country where the major cities are listed but the minor city roads and city streets are
not.
Block diagrams are similar to Flowcharts. You'll need to create blocks, just
like rectangular shapes, that represent important points of interest within the
framework from input to output. The lines connecting the blocks will show the
relationship between these components.
Blocks are helpful when designing new processes and upgrading those that
already exist. It relies on the principle of the black box where it cares less about what
happens getting from input to output. We know what goes in, we know what goes
out, but we can't see how the box does its work. It uses very basic geometric shapes:
boxes and circles. Its principal parts and functions are represented by blocks
connected by straight and segmented lines describing its relationships.

Tips for Making a Block Diagram

• Identify the system. Find out the method you will use and characterize its
components, inputs, and outputs.
• Create and label the diagram. Use symbols for each component and connect
them with arrows to demonstrate flow. To easily identify the flow, label each
block.
• Indicate input and output. Ensure you exactly mark the input that indicates
the start and label output that closes the block.
• Verify accuracy. Consult with the concerned team to verify accuracy.
Block Diagrams are used in most industries to demonstrate functional
processes in respective fields.

Block Diagrams for Software Design

A block diagram makes a

very effective representation of the
overall running of a computer
system.
It displays a program
residing within the memory unit of
a computer comprises of a sequence
instruction. These instructions are
executed by the processor by going
through a cycle for each instruction.

Block Diagrams for Electrical Engineering

This diagram is an illustration of an

instrumentation channel designed to
measure neutron flux, show measured flux,
and generate output signals for utilize by
other frameworks.
Each single block is design within the
development of a signal used to show on the
meter at the lower end or to send to systems
beyond the boundaries of the diagrams.
The blocks are of different sizes and
represent either multiple capacities, direct
stage, or one bistable circuit in a more
prominent component.

What is a Layout Plan?

Layout plans are detailed representations of facilities. Plans are common
design drawing and technical structural convention for graphic representation of
architecture. The process of creating plans and the ability of producing them is
frequently referred to as technical drawing. The goal of plans is either to describe an
existing place or object, or to give sufficient data to allow a builder to realize a design.
Layout planning is deciding on the best physical arrangement of all resources
that consume space within a facility. These resources might incorporate a work area,
a work center, a cabinet, an individual, an entire office, or even a department. Proper
layout planning can be critical in building good working connections, increasing the
flow of data, and improving communication while a poor layout may result to a lot of
wasted time, energy, and confusion.

Example of Layout Plan: A Floor Plan

The building plans and blueprints are

valuable for planning and development
various premises, including definitely
offices, small and large office buildings, and
entire business centers.
Comfort and convenience are the
foremost important for premises, they let
configure on a working mood and increase
the work efficiency, so the designer ought to
consider carefully all subtle elements.
Generally speaking, a floor plan could
be a drawing with scale sizes that show the
Office layout. Creative Commons Licenses positions of rooms, equipment, and
furniture viewed from above.
Typical floor plan has the following basic elements:
1. Dimension Lines. These are the estimations of showing the length of things
in reality, for example, the length of windows etc.
2. Scale. This shows in what degree the entire space can fit on a piece of paper
when you draft it wherein the most common scale ration is ¼ inch equals 1-
foot-long in reality.
3. Room Types and Items. These may include walls, windows, doors, room,
closets, sofa, stairs, appliances (lamp, television, oven etc.), fixtures, or even
outdoor garden layouts.

Since numerous frameworks are complex and require various details for
installation, specialized additional plan drawings may be used, such as:
1. Structural. It is a plan or set of plans and subtle elements for how a building
or other structure will be built. It shows the foundation, floor, and roof plan
of the building which provide information like size and location of the
structural elements present in the respective plans. While smaller projects
may only appear structural information on the plans and sections, larger
projects have separate sheets depicting the structure of the building.
2. Mechanical. It shows plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning
systems, or fire security systems and transportation around the building like
elevators and escalator. These drawings are often a set of detailed drawings used
for construction projects based on the floor and reflected ceiling plans of the
architect.
3. Electrical. It shows information about cable tray layout, lighting and power,
grounding, telephone, LAN, communications or signal systems, or a reflected
lighting plan for engineering or architectural project.
