TLE Grade9CSS Module1 Quarter3 Week1

Networks connect computers together to allow sharing of resources and communication. There are several types of networks including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and wireless local area networks (WLANs). A LAN connects computers within a small geographic area like a school or building using cables. A WAN connects larger geographic areas using technologies like telephone lines. A WLAN uses WiFi to connect devices wirelessly within a local area.

TLE 9-CSS : THIRD QUARTER : WEEK 1

COMPUTER NETWORK CONCEPT

Networks are collections of computers, software, and hardware that are all
connected to help their users work together. A network connects computers
by means of cabling systems, specialized software, and devices that manage
data traffic. A network enables users to share files and resources, such as
printers, as well as send messages electronically (e-mail) to each other.
Learning Competencies
LO 1 Install network cables (TLE_IACSS912SUCN-Iva-j-33)
1.1 Plan cable routes in accordance with network design and actual
installation site.
Computer Network Concepts
Objectives

At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to acquire the
following:
Identify the different types of network; Draw a sample of the
different types of network;
Let’s Recall (Review)
Direction: Read the sentences carefully and identify the word or phrase
being asked in each test item. Write your answer in the space provided
before the number.
_____________1. It refers to the arrangement or set-up of the hardware and
software that make up a computer system.
_____________2. A type of software that manages computer hardware, software,
resources, and provides common services for computer programs.
_____________3. These are small software programs that help the operating
system use or “drive” the device or peripherals connected to a computer.
_____________4. It is a component of the Microsoft Windows that allows users to
view and change system settings such as hardware, software, controlling user
accounts, changing accessibility options, and accessing network settings.
_____________5. It refers to a Control Panel applet that allows a user to view,
check, and diagnose or configure the peripherals/ devices or hardware components
attached to a computer.

Let’s Understand
A network consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share
resources (such as printers and CD-ROMs), exchange files, or allow
electronic communications. The computers on a network may be linked
through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light
beams. Types of network
• Local Area Network (LAN) o a Local Area Network (LAN) is a
network that is confined to a relatively small area. It is generally limited
to a geographic area example: writing lab, school, or building.
Rarely are LAN computers more than a mile apart.

o In a typical LAN configuration, one computer is designated as
the file server. It stores all of the software that controls the
network, as well as the software that can be shared by the
computers attached to the network.
o Computers connected to the file server are called workstations.
The workstations can be less powerful than the file server, and
they may have additional software on their hard drives. On most
LANs, cables are used to connect the network interface cards
in each computer.

• Wide Area Network (WAN)

o Wide Area Networks
(WANs) connect larger
geographic areas, such as
Florida, the United States, or
the world. Dedicated
transoceanic cabling or
satellite uplinks may be used
to connect this type of
network.

• Wireless Local Area Network

(WLAN) o Stands for "Wireless
Local Area Network." A WLAN,
or wireless LAN, is a network
that allows devices to connect
and communicate wirelessly.
Unlike a traditional wired LAN,
in which devices communicate
over Ethernet cables, devices
on a WLAN communicate via
Wi-Fi.
o While a WLAN may look
different than a
traditional LAN, it
functions the same way.

Let’s Apply
Directions: Identify which type of network is being used in the given
scenario.
Write your answer in the space provided.
1. Computer desktop is connected to the printer with help of a printer cable. _________
2. A movie from your cellphone can be project in your smart TV under the same Wi-Fi
connection. ____________________
3. The company’s computer in Makati branch is connected to its
Parañaque branch with the help of telephone line. ________________
4. Danica’s laptop is connected to their router same thing with her sister’s tablet.
_____________________
5. Marlon’s desktop computer is connected to his friend’s computer who lived next to
his apartment for them to play offline games like counter strike. ________________

Let’s Analyze
Directions: The activities below represent a scenario or
event that you may encounter as an ICT expert which job
is to build a computer network. The task is to suggest what
type of network is preferable base on the given scenario and
provide explanation why you choose that type of network. Use the space
provided for the answer.
1. One of your client task you to connect her desktop computer into her
friends’ computer which live next to her apartment so that they can
play counter strike even though without an internet connection.
Type of network. ___________________________________
Why? _________________________________________________________
2. Your father asks you to create a network for his brand new wireless
printer which allows you to print if connected in the same network.
Type of network. ___________________________________
Why? _________________________________________________________
3. Your client is a biologist which field work is in the middle of the forest
and she want you to create a network to connect her computer in the
forest thru telephone lines directly to her lab which is two cities away.
Type of network. ___________________________________
Why? _________________________________________________________

Let’s Create

Create a drawing of the different types of network. Each network

must be labelled as possible.

Rubrics:

Criteria Points
Drawing is precise to the given type of network. 15
Drawing includes many details (name, places, or device) 20
Drawing is legible and clear enough to see all the details 25
Drawing includes a written portion that explains what the drawing 40
intended to show.
