Lesson: Uses of Tools in Computer Systems
Servicing
To complete hardware repairs, it
is important to have a toolkit that
should contain all of the
necessary tools. The CSS tools
are group into four categories.
Four Categories of Tools
1. Electro – Static Discharge ( ESD ) tools
2. Hand tools
3. Cleaning tools
4. Diagnostic tools
Electro-Static Discharge Tools
(ESD)
Are tools used to control discharge of
electrostatic electricity.
Examples of ESD tools.
1. Anti- static wrist strap
2. Anti – static mat
Example of Electro-Static
Discharge Tools (ESD)
Anti-static wrist strap –
Used to prevent ESD
damage to computer
equipment.
Example of Electro-Static
Discharge Tools (ESD)
Anti-static mat –
Used to stand on or place
hardware on to prevent
static electricity from
building up.
Hand Tool
A hand tool is a device for performing work
on a material or a physical system using only
hands.
Examples:
Philips head screwdriver, tweezers ,wire cutter, torx screwdriver
hex driver, needle –nose plier, flashlight, crimping tool, etc
Examples of Hand Tools
Flat Head Screwdriver – Used
to loosen or tighten slotted
screws.
Philips Head Screwdriver –
Used to loosen or tighten
cross-head screws.
Examples of Hand Tools
Torx Screwdriver - Used to loosen or
tighten screws that have a star-like
depression on the top, a feature that
is mainly found on laptop.
Hex Driver – Used to tighten nuts
in the same way that a screwdriver
tightens screws.
Example of Hand Tool
Crimping Tool
is a device used to conjoin
two pieces of metal by
deforming one or both of
them in a way that causes
them to hold each other.
Examples of Hand Tools
Tweezers – Used to manipulate
small parts.
Flashlight – Used to light up areas
that you cannot see well.
Cleaning Tools
The following are examples of cleaning tools;
• Lint free cloth • Cable ties
• Compressed air • Parts organizer
• Brush
Examples of Cleaning Tools
Lint-free Cloth – Used to clean
different computer components
without scratching or leaving debris.
Compressed Air – Used to blow away
dust and debris from different
computer parts without touching the
components.
Examples of Cleaning Tools
Cable Ties – Used to bundle
cables neatly inside and outside
of a computer.
Parts Organizer – Used to hold screw,
jumpers, fasteners and other small
parts and prevents them from getting
mixed together.
Example of Cleaning Tool
Brush can be used for
cleaning the computer
Diagnostic Tools
These tools are used to check the condition or status of a
component. The following are examples of diagnostic
tools;
• Multimeter
• Loopback adapter
Examples of Diagnostic Tools
Multimeter – Used to test the
integrity of circuits and the quality of
electricity in computer components.
Loopback Adapter – Used to test
the functionality of computer ports.
