This document provides an overview of Creative Commons (CC) as a non-profit organization that offers free legal tools to allow creators to publish their works with more flexible sharing and reuse terms. CC resolves the tension between technology enabling easy copying and distribution of digital works, and copyright law. CC licenses allow creators to pre-determine terms for others to share, remix, build upon, comment on, or translate their works with attribution, share-alike, no derivatives or non-commercial restrictions. CC licenses can be encoded in RDFa, ccREL, XMP, and liblicense provides applications to read and write license metadata.
