I.P., Copyright, Creative
Commons, Citations and
You
Grade 7 2012
What is Intellectual Property?
 Anything you can create

                                 Intellectual Property
  becomes your intellectual
  property
 A drawing, a story, a
  picture, a dance – if you’ve
created it then it is yours
 Much of what people create
can be found online for free
 BUT that doesn’t make it
  yours to use.
What is Copyright?
 All your original work automatically
  has a “Copyright”

 That means no one else can use your
  work without your permission

                                          Copyright
 If you take someone’s copyrighted
  work without their permission, you
can get in a LOT of trouble

 It’s like stealing

 For people like artists and musicians
  who make money from their
work, this can be a real problem
 As the creator of something, you
have a right to choose where it is
shown and how it is shown
 Kids have the same rights as

                                       Copyright 2
  adults
 BUT remember….once you post
something you have created to a
public site, you don’t always have
control of how others use it
 THINK before you POST
Creative Commons
 Bill C-11 is waiting to pass – it
  will change the Canadian
  copyright laws with regards to
  education

                                      So………
 In the meantime, when you
  can, look for a Creative
  Commons symbol
 DO NOT rip off artists!
 Learn how to properly cite all
  your sources (web
  pages, books, photos, music, etc)
Coming to a classroom
near you….(on Thursday)

Citations and
 bibliographies…oh my!
