All browsers can compress HTML, XML, Text, and Microsoft Word documents.  Other file types like JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), and Acrobat (PDF) can be compressed by certain supported browsers only.  At the same time the .gif and .gpg files are not compressed because they are already compressed.
