Computer Firewall

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS


When you enter any school premises, there’s a person who always ask you to wear your ID. That
person is the School Security Personnel. He always assure that the person who enters the school premises
is authorized so that the safety of the students and school personnel are guaranteed. They prevent
intruders or outsiders from entering the school for safety purposes.
In computer, we have that kind of security feature that establish a barrier or an invisible wall from
trusted or untrusted network. It act as the first line of computer’s defense aside from Anti-Virus. It decides
whether to allow or block specific traffic based on a defined set of security rules. When we access the
internet, we open different websites or links without knowing if that site is safe or not which can expose
us from danger like hacking, identity theft, malware, and online fraud. That security feature is called a
Firewall.
Firewalls carefully analyze incoming traffic based on pre-established rules and filter traffic
coming from unsecured or suspicious sources to prevent attacks. It guards traffic at a computer’s entry
point, called ports, which is where information is exchanged with external devices. It essentially works to
filter out the good from the bad, the trusted from the untrusted. It can also help block malicious software
from infecting your computer. It can be hardware, software, or both.

TURNING ON YOUR COMPUTER’S FIREWALL


Follow the steps to access Firewall.
Step 1: Click Start Button on your computer. If you are using Windows 8, right click Start Button.

* Located in the lower left corner of your screen having a Windows icon (logo).
Step 2. Click Control Panel Step 3. Click System and Security

Step 4. Click Windows Firewall. Step 5. Turn on your Firewall Settings. Settings
located in left side of the screen. Configure settings
based on the network you use.
