Quarter: 3 Week: 3 SSLM No. 3 ELC(s): Using Hand Tools

⮚ Topic: Use appropriate hand tools for proper operation and safety
⮚ Objective:
 Identify hand tools
 Use appropriate hand tools for a specific task
 Apply preventive maintenance of hand tools

Let Us Discover

Proper Use of Hand Tools

Before you perform any task or repair on your computer, you should first become
familiar with the many types and tools available. Correct use of hand tools has a great help
to avoid accidents and damage to equipment and individuals performing the task. Every job
requires the use of the appropriate tool. Make sure you understand how to utilize each tool
properly. The correct use of hand tools makes the job easier and ensures that tasks are
completed correctly and safely.

Computer Hardware tools are grouped into four categories:

 ESD (electro static discharge) tools
 Hand tools
 Cleaning tools
 Diagnostic tools

1. ESD Tools designed to help eliminate static electricity. It does this by having a controlled
low resistance and so would not provide grounding.
Anti-static wrist strap is used to prevent ESD damage to computer equipment.
Anti-static Mat is designed to help eliminate static electricity from building up.

2. Hand Tools - is a device for performing work on a material or a physical system using
only hands. It can be used manually or electrically powered, using electrical current.
Flat Head Screwdriver - used to drive or fasten negative slotted screws.
Philips Head Screwdriver - is used to drive or fasten positive slotted screws.
Torx Screwdriver - is used to loosen or tighten screws that have a star-like depression
on the top, a feature that is mainly found on laptop.
Hex Driver - sometimes called a nut driver, is used to tighten nuts in the same way that
a screwdriver tightens screws.

Long Nose Pliers - is used for holding, bending and stretching the lead of electronics
component or connecting wire.
Wire Cutter - is used to strip and cut copper, brass, iron, aluminum and steel wires.
Tweezers - used to manipulate small parts.
Part Retriever - used to retrieve parts from location that is too small for your hand to fit.
Flashlight - used to light up areas that you cannot see well.
Soldering Stand - is a hand tool composed of a heavy-duty metal base and a reinforced
spring holder.
Crimping Tool - is a tool used to conjoin two pieces of metals by deforming one or both
that causes it to hold together.
Soldering iron - is a hand tool used to join two or more metal conductors with the
support of soldering lead melted around it.

3. Cleaning Tools having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining or
repairing computers. Using these tools ensures that computer components are not damaged
during cleaning.

Lint-free cloth is used to clean different computer components without scratching or

leaving debris.
Compressed Air used to blow away dust and debris from different computer parts
without touching the components.
Cable Ties used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside of a computer.
Parts Organizer used to hold screw, jumpers, fasteners and other small parts and
prevents them from getting mixed together.

4. Diagnostic Tools computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new
generation of hardware and operating system update, but that does not mean they are
problem free.
Multi-tester is a tool used to test the integrity of circuits and therefore the quality of
electricity in computer components.
Loopback Adapter used to test the functionality of computer ports.
Lan Tester is a tool designed to check most network cable wiring.

Proper Maintenance of Tools – Misuse and incorrect maintenance of hand tools are the
most common dangers of these hand tools. To keep workers safe, all tools and equipment
must properly be maintained, follow preventive maintenance, and store them properly to
avoid damage and to extend its productivity.

The following are some of the tips in using safe tools:

1. If excessive force is needed to remove or add a component, something may be wrong.
2. Magnetized tools should not be used around electronic devices.
3. Pencils should not be used inside the computer because the pencil lead can act as a
conductor and may damage the computer components.
4. Before cleaning any device, turn it off and unplug the device from the power source.

Let Us Try

Activity 1: True or False

Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct otherwise write FALSE.
1. Hand tools are grouped into four categories.
2. ESD Tools are designed to help eliminate static electricity and grounding.
3. It is normal for a hand tool if excessive force is needed to remove or add a component.
4. Crimping tool is used to conjoin two pieces of metals by deforming one or both that
causes it to hold together.
5. Multi-tester is used to test the integrity of circuits and the quality of electricity in
computer components.

Let Us Do

Activity 2. Identify the appropriate hand tools required to complete the task based
on the given scenario.

Situation: Tool to be used:

1. Ann wants to open her laptop to clean the internal parts. What
tools are needed to do the task?

2. Jack with his group mates assemble a simple circuit. They

wanted to make it sure that it is functional. What tool/s is/are
needed to test the simple circuit?

3. Abel is in-charge of community net café. One of his client PC is

not working. He wanted to check if their Cable is broken.

4. Vince, a computer technician used this tool for holding,

bending, and stretching the lead of electronic component
or connecting wire.

5. Dan scheduled to dis-assemble and assemble his

computer unit but he needs to prepare the appropriate
tools for the task. He has a hard time looking for the tools
used to eliminate electrostatic discharge in his work area
and the diagnostic tool which is used to test the integrity
of circuits. Help Dan identify the name of the tools he is
looking for.
