GRADE 9-COMPUTER SYSTEMS SERVICING

Quarter 2-Week 2
AUTHOR: PAMELA L. CRUZ

Module 2: Install Network Cables

The Learner will be familiar with how to install network cables in accordance with network design and actual
installation site.

Can you imagine a world now without emails, online newspapers, blogs, chat, and the other services offered
by the internet?

Computer networks help users on the network to share resources and communicate.

A computer network is a group of devices connected with each other through a transmission medium such as
wires, cables, etc. These devices can be computers, printers, scanners, Fax machines, etc. The purpose of
having a computer network is to send and receive data stored in other devices over the network.

From your previous lesson, A computer network is a group of computers that use a set of common
communication protocols over digital interconnections for sharing resources located on or provided by
the network nodes

Based on the size and the coverage area, networks are categorized into the following types:

✔ Personal Area Network (PANs)

✔ Local Area Networks (LANs)
✔ Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs)
✔ Wide Area Networks (WANs)

Networking hardware, also known as network equipment or computer networking devices, are electronic devices,
which are required for communication and interaction between devices on a computer network. Specifically, they
mediate data transmission in a computer network.

ESD TOOLS:

Electronic Software Distribution, a system for selling software over a network. ESD systems provide secure
communications that customers use to download and pay for software. These systems can operate over the
Internet or on a direct modem-to-modem connection

There are two ESD tools: the antistatic wrist strap and the antistatic mat.

Anti-Static Wrist Strap

An antistatic wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet is

an antistatic device used to safely ground a person working on very sensitive electronic equipment, to prevent
the buildup of static electricity on their body, which can result in electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Anti Static Mat

The Anti-static mat is laid on desktops to prevent ESD (electrostatic discharge). Anti-static chair mats are
conductive and used to eliminate static so that people aren't shocked.

RJ 45 (Registered Jack-45)

Registered Jack-45 is a common data-networking interface that employs a cable of twisted

wire pairs and an 8-pin modular jack. RJ-45 is used for Ethernet and Type 3 Token Ring networks.

Crimping Tool

A crimping tool is used to make cold weld joints between two wires or a wire and a
connector, such as lugs. Ideally, the electrical and mechanical properties of the weld joint
are as strong as the parent materials.

Coaxial Cable

http://computernetworkingtopics.weebly.com/coaxial-cable.html

A coaxial cable is a type of shielded and insulated copper cable that is used in computer
networks and to deliver cable TV services to end-users.
Types of Coaxial Cable:

There are four (4) types of Coaxial Cable

1. RJ 58

✔ The cheapest form of coaxial cable

✔ Maximum segment length is 200 meters
✔ Offers resistance of 50 ohms
✔ Interference protection is better than twisted pair cable

https://nordencommunication.com/en-gb/product/rg-58-coaxial-cable-50-ohm-tc-braid-95-coverage
2. RG8

✔ The disadvantage is rigidness due to which is it only used

as
a backbone
✔ Offers resistance of 50 ohms
✔ Expensive than RG58
✔ Interference protection is good to compare to any copper
cable

Fiber Optic Cable

https://www.shireeninc.com/fiber-optics-and-its-importance/

A fiber optic cable is a network cable that contains strands of glass fibers inside an
insulated casing. Fiber optic cables support much of the world's internet, cable television,
and telephone systems.

They are designed for long-distance, high-performance data networking, and

telecommunications. Compared to wired cables, fiber optic cables provide higher
bandwidth and transmit data over longer distances.

Fiber Optic Cable Type

1. Single Mode
2. Multi-Mode

Single Mode Fiber Optic Cable

✔ Fiber Optic Cable that uses lasers are known as single

mode cable
✔ A type of cable that has only a single strand of glass fiber
with a thin diameter
✔ Data can be transmitted at higher speeds and over long distances

http://www.fiberopticpatch-cord.com/sale-11303740-adss-single-mode-optical-fiber-fibre-optic-patch-leads-self-supporting-aerial.html

Multi-mode Fiber Optic Cable

✔ A type of cable that contains a glass of fiber

with a large diameter
✔ It is a 62.5/125 micrometer fiber cable

Twisted Pair Cable

Twisted Pair Cables comes in two varieties:

A. Shielded
B. Unshielded

A. Shielded Twisted Pair Cable (STP)

https://networkencyclopedia.com/shielded-twisted-pair-stp-cabling/

Shielded twisted pair is a special kind of copper telephone wiring used in some business
installations. An outer covering or shield is added to the ordinary twisted-pair telephone
wires; the shield functions as a ground.

✔ Each pair is twisted with a different number of twists per inch to help eliminate
interference from adjacent pairs and other electrical devices.
✔ The cable has four pairs of wires inside the jacket.
✔ The tighter the twisting, The higher the supported transmission rate
✔ EIA- Electronic Industry Association
✔ TIA-Telecommunication Industry Association

B. Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable (UTP)

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Unshielded-Twisted-Pair-UTP-cable_143870299.html

The Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable (UTP) is the most popular and is generally the best
option for the school network. UTP cable is a 100-ohm copper cable that consists of 2 to
1800 unshielded twisted pairs surrounded by an outer jacket. They have no metallic shield.
This makes the cable small in diameter but unprotected against electrical interference.

✔ The cheapest form of cables available for networking purpose

✔ Pair of Unshielded wires wound around each other
✔ Highly used in LAN environment

Lesson 3:

Steps on How to create LAN Cables

Ethernet Cabling has been the standard in networking installation for years. It is the fastest
way of connecting a PC to a peer or to your router or to a central switch.

There are two kinds of LAN Cable, the Straight-through Cable, and the Cross-Over Cable.

When you connect two devices of different types together, you use a straight-through cable.
When you connect two devices of the same type together, you use a crossover cable. All
cables are straight through if you insert a network device between two devices of the same
kind

Terminologies to Remember

EIT-Engineering and Information Technology

ITA-Internet Technology and Architecture
TIA- Telecommunications Industry Association

Straight-through Cable

The Straight-Through wired cables are most commonly used to connect a host to a client. It is
a type of twisted-pair copper wire cable for local area network (LAN) use for which the RJ-45
connectors at each end have the same pinout When we talk about cat5e patch cables,
the Straight-Through wired cat5e patch cable is used to connect computers, printers, and
other network client devices to the router switch or hub.

Cross Over Cable

A Crossover cable is used to connect computing devices together directly. It is most

often used to connect two devices of the same type, e.g. two computers (via their network
interface controllers) or two switches to each other.

A crossover cable is a type of twisted-pair copper wire cable for LANs (local area network) in
which the wires on the cable are crossed over so that the receive signal pins on the RJ-45
connector on one end are connected to the transmit signal pins on the RJ-45 connector on
the other end.

How to Make a Network Cable

Step 1: Skin off the cable jacket with a cable stripper

Step 2: Untwist each pair and straighten each wire

Step 3: Cut the wires 1.5 cm long

Step 4:
Insert the wire into the RJ45 (the pins facing up) according to
the LAN Cable you are making (Straight through or Cross)

Step 5: Place the connector into a crimping tool and squeeze hard
so that the handle reaches its full swing
