Objective:

Lesson/Topic: Front panel Connection


This module is a continuation of the system unit front panel connection. Reminder! Just
follow the instructions given. Now let us start exploring new things in this module.

What To Know

In our previous lesson, we discuss the front panel connectors. The typical system
case has the following front panel features:

1. Power switch: Switches your system on or off.


2. Reset switch: Used when you need to return the PC to a known state if it freezes
3. Power light: The light you see illuminated when your PC is turned on.
4. Hard drive light: Indicates that one or more of your hard drives is active
5. Headphone jack: Where you plug in your headphones/headset
6. Mic jack: Where you plug in audio recording devices such as microphones.
7. USB ports: There are various USB speeds including USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1,
USB-C, etc., and a case will often color-code different types.

Types of front panel cables


HDD LED (IDE LED) - The LED activity light for the hard drive. This indicator is the light
that flashes as information is being written to and read from the hard drive.
PLED (Power LED) - The LED power light, which indicates when the computer is on,
off, or in Standby.
PWRSW (Power SW) - Controls the power button that allows you to turn on and off the
computer.
Reset SW - Handles the reset button to restart the computer.
Speaker - The internal speaker used to sound the beep noises you hear from your
computer when it is booting.
