Give at least three ways on how you can properly
dispose old computers or electronic gadgets.

Discussion
Every task requires the use of the correct tool. Every technician should be able to
identify tools and their purpose. Documenting all repairs and computer problems must
always be done so that it can be used as reference for similar problems that may arise
in the future.
Hardware Tools
Every technician should have their own tool kit containing all the necessary tools
needed to complete hardware repairs.
Hardware tools are categorized into four groups: ESD Tools, Hand Tools,
Cleaning Tools, and Diagnostic Tools. – ESD Stands for

55
Hand tools

are used for computer assembly and are available either individually or as part of a
computer repair tool kit. The following are the commonly used hard tools.

56
Cleaning tools

Ensure that computer components are properly cleaned.

Software Tools - It is used to help diagnose problems, maintain hardware, and

protect data stored in a computer. These can be categorized into two groups: Disk
Management Tools and Protection Software Tools.

Disk Management Tools - Are used to detect and correct disk errors, remove
unwanted files, and prepare a disk for data storage.

Fdisk (not available in Windows 7 and above) - this is a command line tool, usually
used in the command prompt to create and delete partitions on a hard drive and boot
partitions.

Format - This is used to delete all data on a hard drive to prepare it for storing
information.

57
Scandisk or Chkdsk - This is used to scan the disk for physical errors in order to
check the integrity of its files and folders.

Defrag - This is used to optimize space on a hard drive in order to access programs
and data faster.

Disk Clean-up - This tool searches for files that can be safely deleted in order to clear
up space on the hard drive.

Disk Management - This tool is used to manage hard drives and partitions, initialize
disks, and create or format partitions.

58
Protection Software Tools - are used to keep the computer safe from viruses,
spyware, and other types of malicious attacks that could damage an operating
system, application, or data, that could cause hardware performance problems or
component failure

Microsoft Security Essentials - This type of tool continuously checks the security of
the computer in order to ensure that the software firewall and anti-virus programs are
working and that automatic updates are downloaded and installed.

Anti-Virus Software - This type of tool protects the computer against virus attacks.

Spyware Remover - This type of tool protects the computer against software that
sends information about the web habits of a user to potential attackers.

Firewall - This type of tool is a program that runs continuously to protect the computer
from unauthorized communications

Organizational Tools – Organizational Tools are used for the documentation of

repairs that could be used as reference material for similar or other problems in the

59
future. These may be paper-based or in electronic form. The latter is preferred since it
is easier to access and search records.

Organizational Tools could be categorized into three types: Personal Reference

Tools, Internet Reference Tools, and Miscellaneous Tools.

1. Personal Reference Tools – Composed or troubleshooting and quick

reference guides, manuals, and repair journals.
 Notes – These are taken down during the investigation and repair
process to ensure that the troubleshooting steps are not repeated or
skipped.
 Journal – This is a documentation of all invoices, upgrades, and repairs.
It also includes a description of the problems and actions taken.
 History of Repairs – This is a detailed list of problems, repairs, dates,
replacement parts (if applicable), and customer information.

2. Internet Reference Tools – Make use of the Internet or World Wide Web as a
source of information about specific hardware problems and possible solutions.
 Search Engines
 Newsgroups
 Manufacturer FAQs
 Computer Manuals
 Forums and Chatrooms
 Technical Websites
 Tool Kit

Proper Use of Tools

Each technician should be aware of how to use tools properly. The improper use of
tools may lead to injuries.

 Antistatic Wrist Strap

Wrap using the strap around the wrist; secure it using the snap or Velcro. The
metal on the back should remain in contact with the skin at all times.

Note: The chassis of the system case is a good place to connect the wire.
When connecting the wire to the equipment, be sure to connect it to an
unpainted metal surface.

60
 Antistatic Mat
 Lay the mat on the workbench or the floor of the workspace.
 Clip the connector to the system case to provide a grounded surface.

Note: If the antistatic mat is laid on the floor, ensure that the antistatic wrist
strap is also worn.
 Screwdrivers
Place the tip of the screwdriver on the head of the screw, assure that the slot is
aligned with the tip.

 Turn clockwise (to the right) in order to tighten the screw.

 Turn counter-clockwise (to the left) to loosen the screw.

Note: Over-tightening a screw could damage it, damaged screws must be

disposed. When working with the electronic devices, assure that the tools used
are not magnetic.

 Part Retriever, Tweezers, and Needle Nose Pliers

Used to place, retrieve, and manipulate small parts.

Note: Assure that no parts that are scratched or hit when using any tool.

Cleaning both the inside and outside of the computer is a vital setup of the
maintenance program. Problems may occur with the mechanical and electrical
components when there is dirt of an excessive build-up of dust inside the system
case.

Proper Cleaning Guide

 Computer Case and Monitor
 Use a mild cleaning solution of dishwashing liquid and water, and a lint-
fee cloth.
 Damp the cloth in the solution and wipe the computer case and the
outside of the monitor.
Note: If any water gets inside the case or monitor, allow it to dry first before
turning on the component.
 LCD Screens
 Use a mild cleaning solution of dishwashing liquid and water, and a lint-
fee cloth.
 Damp the cloth in the solution and gently wipe the screen.

Note: Do not use ammoniated glass cleaners, unless it is specified for the
purpose.
 CRT Screens

61
 Use a glass cleaner and a soft, dry cloth.
 Spray the glass cleaner onto the cloth and wipe the screen of the
monitor.

 Dusty Components (i.e. Heat Sinks)

 Use a can of compressed air to blow out the build-up of dust on the
component.
Note:
 Assure that the process is done in a well-ventilated area.
 Wear a face mask to avoid inhaling any dust particles.
 Use short bursts from the can.
 Never use the can upside down.
 Assure that the fans do not spin to prevent it from malfunctioning.

 Component Contacts (i.e. RAM Sick)

 Use isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs or cotton buds.

 Damp the cotton with alcohol and gently clean the component.

Note: if any lint gets on the contact, blow it off using compressed air. Do not use
rubbing alcohol for it contains impurities that may damage the contact.
 Keyboard
 Use either a handled vacuum that has brush attachment.
 Use compressed air to blow any dust or dirt.
 Do not use a vacuum for cleaning the inside of the system case.

Note: It is best to use compressed air for keyboards that are built into the computer
(i.e. portable computer keyboards).
 Mouse
 Use a glass cleaner and a soft, dry cloth.
 Spray the glass cleaner onto the cloth and wipe the surface of the
mouse.
 When cleaning a mechanical mouse, remove the ball the wipe both the
ball and the inside of the mouse.

Note: Do not spray the cleaner directly on or inside the mouse.
