Information sheet 1.5 Networking Cables and its types

Networking cables are used to connect one network device to other network
devices or to connect two or more computers to share printer, scanner etc. Different types
of network cables like Coaxial cable, Optical fiber cable, Twisted Pair cables are used
depending on the network's topology, protocol and size.
While wireless may be the wave of the future, most computer networks today still
utilize cables to transfer signals from one point to another.

Types of Twisted pair cable

1. Straight through cable
2. Cross link cable

Straight-through cable is a type of twisted pair copper wire cable for local area
network (LAN) use for which the RJ-45 connectors at each end have the same. Straight-
through cable is also commonly referred to as patch cable.
An Ethernet crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable used to connect
computing devices together directly

Operation Sheet 1.1

Operation Title Creating Ethernet Cable

The objective of this operation sheet is to make
Operation Objectives
students learn on how to create deferent cables.
 Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) patch cable
Materials  Modular connector (RJ45)
 Crimping tool
 Cable tester (optional, but recommended)
Procedures
Step 1: Strip the cable jacket
about 1.5 inch down from the
end.

Step 2: Spread the four pairs of

twisted wire apart and untwist the
wire pairs and neatly align them
in the T568A orientation or
depending on what cable you are
doing.
Step 3: Cut the wires as straight
as possible, about 0.5 inch above
the end of the jacket.

Step 4: Carefully insert the wires

all the way into the RJ-45,
making sure that each wire
passes through the appropriate
guides inside the connector.

Step 5: Push the connector

inside the crimping tool and
squeeze the crimper all the way
down

Step 6: Repeat steps 1-5 for the

other end of the cable.

Step 7: To make sure you've

successfully terminated each
end of the cable, use a cable
tester to test each pin.

When you're all done,

Operation Sheet
1.2
Operation Title Creating Ethernet Cable
The objective of this operation sheet is to make
Operation Objectives students learn on how to wire/punch down cable
on patch panel.
 Patch Panel
Materials  Punch down tool
 Crimping tool
 UTP Cable
Procedures
1. Prepare all necessary tools, equipment and materials
2. Strip the jacket of UTP Cable

3. Spread the four pairs of twisted wire apart and untwist the wire pairs and neatly
align them on patch panel base on color coding.

4. Use punch down tool to secure the connection of each wire to patch panel
