Brief Introduction

Nowadays, computers are everywhere. We use computers to do our projects, reports,

and other tasks. It becomes vital to our daily activities and business operations. As a

result, these devices should be properly checked-up, maintained as well as kept in

great condition. Hiring computer repair services outside the company and even at

home are expensive and takes too long to search.

As an aspiring computer technician, it is only necessary to know the proper use of

tools to prevent accidents and damage to equipment and people. Knowing the right

tool for the right job and making sure to familiarize oneself with the proper use of each

tool makes the job less difficult and ensures that tasks are performed properly and

safely.

In this module, learners will be introduced to the different learning activities to be

prepared and skillful in the world of ICT - Computer System Servicing. This module

will concentrate on Lesson I: Use and Maintenance of Hand Tools (UHT).

MAINTAINING HAND TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

We should keep in mind that a great set of tools will always be useful to us if we know

how to take good care and protect it against rust and other damage and by storing it

neatly and carefully. We don’t need to buy expensive, top of the brand hand tools.

Instead, we only need to take good care and properly maintain hand tools for it to last

long.

Preventive maintenance is the systematic care and protection of tools, equipment and

machines in order to keep them in a safe, usable condition, limit downtime and extend

productivity. We must always be aware that maintenance tasks themselves are

potentially hazardous and can result in injury. The successful maintenance program

is:

 well organized and scheduled,

 controls hazards,

 defines operational procedures, and

 trains key personnel.

General requirements for tools and equipment maintenance include:

 Obtaining a copy of the maintenance schedule recommended by the

manufacturer
  Ensuring that maintenance is performed as required

 Ensuring that the person(s) performing the maintenance are competent (e.g.

licensed mechanic)

 Retaining records of maintenance/service conducted

 Specifying who is responsible for overseeing equipment maintenance and

where the records are kept

 Set up a system for removal and tagging of damaged or defective tools and

equipment

Here are some tips to take care of hand tools:

1. Keep them clean

Cleaning tools will only take a few minutes. Always keep in mind that tools must

remain free of dust and debris to avoid damage if not taken care of. It is important to

spend time cleaning the tools compared to the cost of replacing or repairing them.

You can clean hand tools by simply wiping all over with a clean rag or lint-free cloth. If

you see that tools are dirty, do not hesitate to provide a good wash just make sure to

dry them properly. Use a light coat of WD-40 to the metal of the hand tools and wipe it

with a clean rag.

2. Inspect and Repair

One must inspect and do the necessary repair for the following:

 Splintered, cracked or loose handles – In case a wooden handle is

damaged, you can sand it down just fine. A broken handle, bent blade

or a dull or twisted tip may cause a screwdriver to slip and result in a

hand injury. A sharp, square-edged bit will not slip as easily as a dull,

rounded one.

 Rust and corrosion – It may be unsafe to use the tool based on the

level of rust or corrosion. Try to remove the rust by yourself or simply

 replace the tool. Getting rid of rust is quite easy in case there is no

great damage.

3. Proper Storage

Cleaning your hand tools is no use if you don’t store them carefully and properly. A

simple toolbox will do when storing tools for computer repair and maintenance. But

you have the option to a use metal cabinet in case you own a big collection of tools or

use them professionally. All tools must be stored and organized in a storage area

after use. In this way, you cannot only access them easily but also keep them safe.

Keep in mind that tools should not rub against each other when stored. Keep all tools

in a dry area, safe from moisture, direct sunlight and dust. Some tools like chisels

must be stored in a holder to prevent injury. Most importantly, do not leave tools in the

work area for it can cause serious hazard later.
