What is It

MULTIMETER
A multimeter or a multi-tester, also known as a VOM (Volt-Ohm
meter), is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several
measurement functions in one unit. The best multimeters can also measure
other electrical characteristics such as continuity, frequency and capacitance.
They also come with built-in non-contact voltage detectors. Multimeters can
either be handheld multimeters, or bench-top multimeters (bench
multimeters).
A typical multimeter or multi-tester can measure voltage, current,
and resistance. When used in this way, a multimeter is known as:

1. A voltmeter when used to measure voltage;

2. An ammeter when used to measure current;

4
3. An ohmmeter when used to measure resistance.

TYPES OF MULTIMETER
Multimeter comes in two types:
1. Analog Multimeter
2. Digital Multimeter

ANALOG MULTIMETER
An analog multimeter (AMM) is a multi-purpose electronic testing
device. A unit will be capable of measuring voltage, current, and
resistance and often has the functionality to test for frequency and signal
power as well. The display of an analog multimeter usually relies on a
microammeter to move a physical pointer over a calibrated scale. The
device may also be referred to as a multi-tester or a Volt-Ohm meter.

PARTS OF ANALOG MULTIMETER

1. Pointer - This is the needle-shaped rod that moves over the scale
of a meter. The needle pointer is mechanically connected to the

5
moving coil. The value the pointer hovers over indicates the value
being measured by the multi-tester.

2. Scale- This is how you read the value being measured. his is a
series of markings in a semicircle.

3. Zero Position Adjuster-Also known as the dial or infinity knob.

This allows you to adjust the pointer to the zero position of
thescale – usually with the help of a flat head screwdriver.

4. Range Selector Knob-Also known as a selector switch. This allows

you to adjust the settings of the multi-tester. Using this you can
change what the multi-tester is measuring (e.g. voltage, current, or
resistance), as well as the range of the measurement (e.g. volts or
millivolts).

5. Test Pins- Multimeter test leads are considered to be an integral

part of electrical measurement, for example connecting your
digital multimeter to the unit under test. If the test leads are in
poor condition this can lead to inaccurate readings and could
result in a health and safety concern if live wires are being read as
being de-energized.

6. Test Probes- Test probes are flexible, insulated wires. They are
able to establish an electrical connection between a multi-tester
and the DUT without exposing electrical workers to live conductive
parts.Red test probes connect to the positive terminal, and black
test probes connect to the negative terminal.

7. Zero Ohm Adjuster Knob -The zero-ohm adjustment knob is used

to calibrate the multi-tester when you want to measure the
resistance of an object.

6
Steps on how to use Analog Multimeter when measuring resistance

A. Initial Steps in Using Analog Multi-tester

1. Connectthetestprobetotheappropriatejack. The red test probe to the

positive (+) jack and the black to the common (-) jack.

2. Checkifthepointerrestsexactlyattheinfinitezeropositioninohmmeterra
nge.

3. Check the probes if they are in condition. (Ohmmeter calibration)

7
a. Set the multi-tester to corresponding selector resistance
range.
b. Short the two test probes together.

Remember:

NOTE: The pointer should deflect towards zero Ohm reading.

Adjust the ohm adjustment if the pointer As indicated, the pointer rests out of the
could not rest exactly at “0” ohm range of ohmmeter scale. Adjust the ohm
reading. adjustment counter clockwise until the
pointer rests “0” ohm reading.

B. Resistance Measurements

1. Alwaysdothe“Initial StepsinUsingan AnalogMulti-tester”.

2. In testing resistors, capacitors, diodes etc. do not touch both test

probe leads because our body also has resistance that could affect

8
the reading value of the electronic components we are testing.

3. If you do not know the value of the resistor to be measured,

find the ohmmeter selector setting until you have a clear
reading in the ohmmeter scale.
4. Selectthedesiredresistancerangescalewithselectorswitch.

DIGITAL MULTIMETER
A digital multimeter is a tool that can measure amps, volts, and
ohms. It is different from an analog meter, which has a needle and a
gauge, in that it has a digital light-emitting diode (LED) display. Digital
multimeters are typically more accurate than their old analog
counterparts. A digital multimeter can also have other functions;
obviously, the more expensive meters will have more features, but all of
them measure the three basic currents.

PARTS OF DIGITAL MULTIMETER

9
1. Display- Where measurement readouts can be viewed.
2. Buttons-For selecting various functions; the options vary by model.
3. Dial Switch-For selecting primary measurement values (volts,
amps, ohms).
4. Test Probes- Test probes are flexible, insulated wires. They are able
to establish an electrical connection between a multi-tester and the
DUT without exposing electrical workers to live conductive parts.
Red test probes connect to the positive terminal, and black test
probes connect to the negative terminal.

Steps on how to use Digital Multimeter in measuring Resistance

1. Use the resistance setting to measure
resistors after disconnecting them.
To measure resistance, the multimeter
sends a small amount of current to the
object you’re testing and gives you its
resistance in ohms. Make sure you
disconnect the thing you’re measuring
so it’s not linked to a power source.
• If you don’t turn off the power,
you could damage your
multimeter.
• Measure the resistance in things
like switches or a motor.
2. Insert the black test lead in
COM and the red test lead in
the Ω terminal. Stick the black
test lead’s plug into the COM
terminal. The red test lead’s
plug goes into the terminal
labeled Ω, which is the symbol
for ohms, the unit that
resistance is measured in.
• The Ω sign is likely linked with the V sign, meaning the
terminal to measure
ohms and voltage is the
same.

10
3. Locate the area represented by the resistance sign. Look for the Ω
symbol on your multimeter’s dial area, which will show the
numbers for resistance. Twist the dial until it’s in this section.

4. Set the dial to a number above the resistance that’s expected. To do

this, it helps to know the rough
amount of resistance of the
thing you’re testing. For
example, if you’re testing a wire,
the number will be closer to zero
because wires don’t have much
resistance, while a piece of wood
is much more resistant. Twist
the dial to a number more than
the expected resistance.
• For example, if you’re
measuring the resistance
of something you think
will have 1,000 ohms, you would set the dial to 2,000.
• The Ω values will range from 200 to 2 million ohms, depending
on the specific type of multimeter.

• If you're not sure what the expected resistance will be, set the
dial to a high number and keep twisting it down until you get
a precise reading.

5. Place the probes on the resistor to test the amount of

resistance. Touch the tips of the probes onto each end of the
resistor. Look at the multimeter’s digital screen to see the reading,
which will tell you the amount of resistance in ohms.
• If your multimeter
is just reading “1,”
you might need to
increase the value
of ohms measured
by turning the dial
so your reading can
be more specific.
• Write down the
reading if needed,
noting the correct unit.
