LEARNING RESOURCE 1.1.2: MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

Computer cables can be used to link several devices to the system and carry out
numerous operations. The computer cables can transmit a digital and analog signal
through it.

What is the difference between a connector, jack, plug, and port?

The plug is part of a cable that connects to a port. The plug always connects to
something else (e.g., a jack or port). A connector is the unique end of a plug, jack, or
the edge of a card that connects to a port and a port has either holes or a slot that
matches the plug or card connected to the port.

Types of Cables

Name and Illustration Function

PS/2 Cable It is a standard cable to connect the mouse

and keyboard to the computer system. The
length of the PS/2 cable is long enough so
that the user can easily connect the mouse
and keyboard to the system and use the
system. There are a total of 6 pins in PS/2
cables and have a round connector.

VGA Cable (Video Graphics Array) It is another type of computer cable which
is used for sending video signals and is
used to link the monitor and the CPU of a
computer. The VGA cable can also be
used in HD televisions. All the information
displayed on the monitor is coming from
the VGA cable. In the cable, there is a total
of 15 pins in the plug which have three
rows containing 5 pins each.

USB Cable (Universal Serial Bus) It is a standard cable that is used to

connect universal devices or any personal
computers. It is mainly used for short-
distance digital communication. The digital
data can be transferred using a USB
cable.

7
Technology & Livelihood Education 9 – Course Guide

Thunderbolt Cable/ USB C

It is a recent type of USB connector that's
easier to use and more powerful than older
USB types. USB-C cables can be used to
quickly charge many popular devices,
including the MacBook Pro and Nintendo
Switch, and transfer data faster than any
other USB type

DVI Cable (Digital Visual Interface)

It is used to connect the LCD monitor and the
video card. Using this cable, the user can see
high image quality without having any
disturbance. The DVI cable is mostly used in
CRT monitors which have a VGA connection.
This cable transmits the digital and analog
signals to the computer system.

HDMI (High-definition Media It is a type of computer cable which is used

Interface) Cable for transmitting high-definition video and
audio signals. Using the HDMI cables the
audio and video signal can be easily
transmitted without compromising the quality
of images and can send crystal clear images
using this cable. It is used to connect cable
boxes, TVs, DVD players, media streamers,
and other electronic devices.

S- Video Cable
It is used to transmit only video signals over
a cable by dividing the video data into a color
and brightness signal. They are typically used
on older televisions that might not have HDMI
to improve picture quality.

3.5 Cable
It is a type of computer cable that is used in
computer audio applications. This cable can
be used for connecting a mini-stereo audio
device, PC sound card, or any portable CD
player to any multimedia speaker. This cable
can also be used to connect earphones and
headphones to the system.

8
Technology & Livelihood Education 9 – Course Guide

Display Port
It is the best to use if you require a fast,
high-resolution image.
The cable has better quality over HDMI
and is the best option if you have this
interface.

Ethernet Cable It is a type of computer network cable

which is used for a wired network. The
Ethernet cable is used to connect the
switches, monitors, PCs to the LAN (Local
Area Network). The length and durability of
the Ethernet cable describe the quality of
the connection.

eSATA (External Serial Advanced It is a SATA connector accessible from

Technology Attachment) Cable outside the computer, to provide a signal
(but not power) connection for external
storage devices. eSATA combines the
functionality of an eSATA and a USB port
and a source of power in a single
connector.

Coaxial Cable It is commonly used by cable operators,

telephone companies, and internet
providers around the world to convey data,
video, and voice communications to
customers. It has also
been used extensively within homes.

Composite Cable It is also known as an RCA or “yellow

plug” cable — is an old standard that
transfers a video signal through
one cable and connector. It does not
support HD content or progressive scan
images.

Computer Power Cord It is the primary cable that provides power

to the computer, printer, monitor, and
components within a computer.

LEARNING RESOURCES 1.3.2 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY

GUIDELINES & PROCEDURES

Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) - A planned system of working to prevent
illness and injury where you work by recognizing and identifying hazards and risks.
As a user, future computer technician, or practitioner, we need to have the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes required to comply with an organizational requirement for
occupational health and safety such as identifying, evaluating, and maintaining
occupational
Steps in Managing Health and Safety at Work
1. Spot the Hazard (Hazard Identification)
2. Assess the Risk (Risk Assessment)
3. Make the Changes (Risk Control)

Spot the Hazard Assess the Risk Make Changes

Falling Debris might get injured Wear Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) and stay away from falling debris

Damaged electrical could result in Call a professional electrician to repair

cords electrical shock the cable

• Boxes stacked • they could fall Ask for help moving or lifting heavy
dangerously on someone objects and arrange it.

1. Spot the hazard

Key point: A hazard is anything that could hurt you or someone else. Identify hazards and
risk factors that have the potential to cause harm
2. Assess the risk
Key point: Assessing the risk means working out how likely it is that a hazard will harm
someone and how serious the harm could be.
Whenever you spot a hazard, assess the risk by asking yourself two questions:
• how likely is it that the hazard could harm me or someone else?
• how badly could I or someone else be harmed?

32
Technology & Livelihood Education 9 – Course Guide

Make the changes

Key point: Determine appropriate ways to eliminate the hazard, or control the risk when the
hazard cannot be eliminated

The best way to fix a hazard is to get rid of it altogether. This is not always possible, but we
should try to make hazards less dangerous by looking at the following options:
• Elimination - Sometimes hazards - equipment, substances, or work practices - can
be avoided entirely. (e.g. Clean high windows from the ground with an extendable pole
cleaner, rather than by climbing a ladder and risking a fall.)
• Substitution - Sometimes a less hazardous thing, substance, or work practice can
be used. (e.g. Use non-toxic glue instead of toxic glue.)
• Isolation - Separate the hazard from people, by marking the hazardous area, fitting
screens, or putting up safety barriers. (e.g. Welding screens can be used to isolate welding
operations from other workers.
• Safeguards - Safeguards can be added by modifying tools or equipment, or fitting
guards to machinery. These must never be removed or disabled by workers using the
equipment.
• Using personal protective equipment and clothing (PPE) – Always wear
appropriate PPE.

Why is risk assessment important?

Risk assessments are very important as they form an integral part of an occupational health
and safety management plan. They help to:
• Create awareness of hazards and risk.
• Identify who may be at risk (e.g., employees, cleaners, visitors, contractors, the
public, etc.).
• Determine whether a control program is required for a particular hazard.
• Determine if existing control measures are adequate or if more should be done.
• Prevent injuries or illnesses, especially when done at the design or planning stage.
• Prioritize hazards and control measures.
• Meet legal requirements where applicable.
A common way to classify hazards is by category:
Physical hazard is a factor or circumstance that can cause harm with or without contact. They
can be classified as type of:
• Occupational Hazards is a hazard experienced in the workplace
• Environmental Hazards is a state or an event which has the potential to threaten the
surrounding natural environment.
Chemical hazard is caused by exposure to chemicals in the workplace. Exposure to
chemicals in the workplace can cause acute or long-term detrimental health effects.
Electrical hazard is a dangerous condition where a worker can or does
make electrical contact with energized equipment or a conductor.
Ergonomic hazards are physical conditions that may pose risk of injury. It includes awkward
postures, static postures, repetitive movements, improper set up of workstation, etc.,

33
Technology & Livelihood Education 9 – Course Guide

Mechanical hazards are created as a result of either powered or manual (human) use of
tools, equipment or machinery and plant.

If risks remain after the options have been tried, it may be necessary to use equipment such
as safety glasses, gloves, helmets, and earmuffs. PPE can protect you from hazards
associated with jobs such as handling chemicals or working in a noisy environment.
Personal Protective Equipment refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other
garment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury by blunt impacts, electrical
hazards, heat, chemicals, and infection, for job-related purposes.

Personal Protective Equipment used in Hardware Servicing

There are certain personal protective devices used in computer hardware servicing, these
equipment are designed to protect the devices against ESD (Electro Static Electricity) and
other environmental hazards.

Anti- Static Devices

Devices are used to protect the computer unit against static electricity.

1. Anti- Static Wrist Strap is used to prevent the buildup

of static electricity.

2. Anti-Static Mat is used to absorb static electricity.

3. Anti- Static Bag is used to store your sensitive devices safe from ESD.

4. Anti-Static Spray is used to remove ESD from your work area.

34
Technology & Livelihood Education 9 – Course Guide

Power Protection Devices

Devices are used to protect the computer from unexpected increases/dropped of
electricity. Power protection devices are also used to avoid short circuits.

1. Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is used to

automatically maintain a constant voltage level.

2. Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) serves as

a battery backup provides emergency power.

3. Surge Suppressors is an appliance designed to

protect electrical devices from voltage spikes.

Maintain occupational health and safety regulations

5S is a structured process to enhance workplace safety, efficiency, and order. It
represents discipline for maintaining a visual workplace that supports world-class quality and
safety.

1. Seiri (Sort) Keep only necessary things and getting rid of what you do not need in
the workplace.
2. Seiton (Straighten, Set in order). The practice of orderly storage so the right item
can be picked efficiently.
3. Seiso (Shine, Sweep) Create a clean worksite without garbage, dirt, and dust.
4. Seiketsu (Standardize) Setting up standards for a neat, clean, and consistently
organized workplace.
5. Shitsuke (Sustain) Implementing behaviors and habits to maintain the established

LEARNING TASK 1.4.2: PRETEST

Identify the following symbols.

LEARNING RESOURCE 1.4.2. Electrical Wiring Symbols and Diagrams

Electrical Symbols are small drawings or pictograms used to represent

various electrical devices in a diagram or plan of an electrical circuit. These symbols
are used in sketching schematic diagrams and electrical plans for numerous types of
electrical works. Practically any electrical fixture found in a house has a symbol that
coincides to said fixture on an electrical wiring diagram. These are very useful guide
for an electrician or electrical contractor, thus, making the wiring easier to install as
well.
The following are common electrical symbols used in sketching wiring plan and
diagram.

Technology & Livelihood Education 9 – Course Guide

The different diagrams that you should be familiar with are the following:
A. Pictorial diagram - It shows the pictures of the actual components and wiring
connections although it does not provide the exact size of components. It shows exact
shape in proportion to the actual component or device. The picture below is an
example of Pictorial Diagram of a Regulated Power Supply.

B. Block Diagram – This form usually uses block of squares, rectangles or

triangles to represent components, group of components or units of equivalent. Block
diagrams are particularly used to represent internal components of an integrated
circuit. To give you an idea how it looks like see the diagram a regulated power supply
of below.

C. Wiring diagram – It shows wiring connection in a simplified, easy to follow

manner. It may show either internal or external connections or both and is usually
drawn as simple as possible to trace out the connection of a circuit. The components
of the circuit are identified by name or are represented by means of pictorial
illustrations that do not follow any well-defined standard form.

45
Technology & Livelihood Education 9 – Course Guide

D. Schematic diagram - is a picture that represents the components of a process,

device, or other object using abstract, often standardized symbols and lines.
Schematic diagrams also called circuit diagrams, these diagrams show how the different
components of a circuit are connected. In these diagrams, lines represent connecting wires,
while other elements like resistors, lamps, and switches are represented by standardized
symbols called electrical schematic symbols.
In electronics, having a schematic diagram on hand may help a user design an entire circuit
before building it, or troubleshoot an electronic that has stopped working. The picture below
is an example of schematic diagram of a graphics card of a computer.

WEEK 6-7

LEARNING RESOURCE 3.2.1: OVERVIEW

In the previous lesson, you were introduced with all the necessary knowledge and
skills about electrical wiring diagram. Now, I am sure that interpreting schematic diagrams is
a very easy task for you. Those skills will be very essential for the next lesson.
If you need any assistance, and questions don’t hesitate to contact and ask your
teacher, they’ll be more than willing to lend you a hand. And most importantly, enjoy your
learning journey.
Upon completion of the module, you should be able to:
a. identify the types of cables are inside the computer
b. check wirings and circuits using specified testing procedures
c. apply proper step by step procedures in checking the connections of the computer

LEARNING TASK 3.2.2: PRETEST

LEARNING RESOURCE 3.2.2. Procedure in Checking Wires and Cables

One of the most common causes of computer problems is that a connector

comes loose. To troubleshoot, check all the cables on the outside of the computer. If
you find all of those in place, you may want to check the cables on the inside of your
computer.
Two types of cables are inside the computer: power and data. Some devices,
like disk drives, require both.
To ensure that cables are properly attached, follow these steps:
1. Open your computer.
2. Locate the spot where the cable attaches.
3. Try to pull the cable. If the cable is loose, it falls out. If it does, reattach it.
4. Gently press the cable so that it is tight and properly attached.

When you find a free cable, one that isn’t plugged in anywhere, try check and
figure out where it should connect. In some instances, cables have never been in use
and are just waiting for a future expansion so do not worry about those.

Computer Case Wires

Computer wiring includes the wires that you see connected to the front of your
case, system fans, and miscellaneous motherboard connections. Let us start with the
case wires.

You can start by identify the different cables

that are attached to your case. These are usually
bundled together near the bottom, and the
computer connectors on the end of the wires are
labeled. You will see things like HDD, Power, PWR,
etc. Look on your motherboard for the front panel
connection area. See label "M" on the motherboard
diagram.

The picture below shows a detailed diagram of how you should connect the
front panel connectors on the motherboard. All you need to do here is to check if each
wire is properly match with its pin assignments. It may vary depending on the model
or brand of your motherboard.

Here are the computer connections we need to plug in:

• POWER LED (also called Message) - This is the connection for the power
LED on the front panel – this will be green when your computer is on.
• POWER SW (this is the power switch on the case) - This is the connection for
the actual power button on the front of your case
• SPEAKER (this is the speaker on the case) - This is the connection for the
speaker on the inside of the case
• HDD LED - This is the connection for the hard drive activity light. This will be
lit when your hard drive is running
• RESET - This is the connection for the reset button on the front of your case

Computer Power Supply

Computer power supply units (PSU) deliver the power to the PC hardware via
several cables with connectors. Their generic specifications for various desktop
systems are defined in Intel's design guides, which used to be periodically revised.
Their latest standard is PSU Design Guide rev.1.31 released on April 2013.

Standard ATX power supplies typically have the main power connector P1,
additional 12V connectors, as well as peripheral, floppy drive, serial ATA, and PCI
Express® receptacles, which we will describe on the next page.

The original ATX systems had 20-pin main connector. When PCI Express® bus
was introduced, PCIe cards needed up to 75W extra. To provide the additional
wattage, the old part has been replaced by a new 24-pin. Below is the diagram of
other power supply connectors attached to different computer hardware.

Using a paper clip to test a power supply

There are various reasons why a computer will shut down. Chief among these
is component overheating. The most common cause of computer overheating is a fan
going bad and failing to cool down a component.
If your system appears to be exhibiting an, abnormally, high temperature and
you suspect that the PSU’s fan has gone bad but are not sure, there is a test you can
perform which should prove whether the fan is working or not. This test is called, The
PSU Paper Clip Test or the jumper test.
This test will identify some common issues:
• Short circuits inside the power supply
• Failed components
• A live power connection

Procedure in testing power supply

1. Connect the power supply testing unit to the
20/24 pin connector.
2. Plug the power supply back into the outlet
and turn it on. Your power supply should
turn on automatically and your power supply
tester will light up.
3. Bend the paperclip and insert one end into
the green pin (PS_ON) and the other into
any of the black pins (Ground).
4. Listen for the internal fan. If you can hear the fan, this should verify the power
supply is turned on and working properly.
