5
What's New

What is a Quality Standard?

It is characterized as the report that gives prerequisites, determinations,

rules, or qualities that can be utilized reliably to guarantee that materials, items,
procedures, and administrations are fit for their motivation.

Standards give associations the common vision, understanding, methods,

and jargon expected to meet the desires of their partners. Since standards present
exact depictions and terminology, they offer a target and definitive reason for
associations and customers around the globe to impart and direct business.

Quality and standards are very important when choosing a material or

buying important things, especially if you want to ensure the durability and lifetime
of an item. The checker is responsible for performing the quality checking. He
needs to record and report the received materials for assurance.

The quality checker can also do the inventory of the materials received
and write it in the logbook. Recording and reporting in the field of computer
systems servicing are very important because it helps you to be specific in
the materials you received and keep even if it is just a simple thing.

7
What is It

What is Quality?
The standard of something which is measured against other things of a
similar kind; essential character nature; degree or grade of excellence. Different
scholars give different Interpretations of the term quality:
 For engineers, it is conformance to specifications.
 For users, it is fitness for use.
 For marketing, it is the degree of excellence at an acceptable price
that will influence the market share.
 For customer service, a quality product is that with less customer
complaints.
The Importance of Quality
 The primary focus is on process improvement.
 Focus on the prevention of errors, not detection.
 Identify and correct sources of variation.
 Higher quality costs less, which means:
o Increased productivity improved
o increased sales
o higher profit
CHARACTERISTICS OF MATERIALS USED IN SPECIFIC PROJECTS

These are the factors that must be taken into consideration when
choosing the right material for their components and assemblies:

1. Selection of material

Material selection is one of the most common tasks for design

engineering. The ability to assess the material's impact on the performance of
a product is crucial for reliable performance.

Sometimes, buyers also considering the label or name of the

company, which is producing a high quality of materials and is known in the
market. Examples are the name H.P. for printer and Intel for some computer
hardware.
2. Testing of material

The testing of material properties is widely understood to be the key to

obtaining data for a project, performing failure analysis, or understanding

8
material interactions. Material testing also provides information on the
quality of incoming and outgoing products. Inspection test equipment and
techniques are demonstrated for a wide range of materials and assemblies
during the class. This provides the participants with both pieces of
knowledge of the common failure modes.

3. Cost of material

The cost of material is also considered when buying or selecting

materials for a specific project. The amount may vary but never taken for
granted the quality and the reliability of the material. Will you purchase less
expensive material but the worst condition? People look for places that can
meet their standards and the right cost for materials to buy.
Characteristic of common materials for increased security is also a
significant factor in the design and planning process. Evaluation of longevity
criteria and assessment of site environmental factors are vital to project
planning.

The characteristics of the materials to be used for a specific project must

be:
1. Of good quality – This is the most important factor when
choosing materials to buy. Products with good quality are long-
lasting and safe to use because you know that it follows specific
standards before being commercialized.

2. Reliable- It means that you can be sure that it will perform its
function well, will operate safely and will give the best it could
give.

3. Suitable for the application/purposes- Choose the materials

which are very necessary to make the project possible. Making a
list of products/materials to buy is a good trait of a wise
consumer. Products which are not to be used must be crossed
out.

4. Low cost- It doesn't mean that you will choose for the less
expensive one and exclude the quality. Low cost means you can
afford to buy the materials without hurting your pocket and
assure of better quality.

9
FAULT IDENTIFICATION AND REPORTING
It's not easy to buy new materials in an individual company if the
criteria are used for a lifetime. Even if you have purchased it already, you still
have to make sure that it is the same specifications required in good condition.
These are the things that need to consider when receiving materials,
receiving reports, returning merchandise, and making an inventory report of
the materials.
For Receiving Materials:
1. Match the packing slip to the items received and ensure that
the materials are destined for the tour department.
2. That you are receiving the materials indicating the purchase
order concerning quantity and discount.
3. That the materials are in acceptable condition.
4. That term regarding the installation and set-up of equipment
are met.
For Receiving Reports
Whenever goods are received:
1. The person receiving the goods must document using the
administrative software, that all goods were received for each
requisition before any payment can be made to the vendor.
2. Any exceptions must be noted so that partial payment can be
processed or defective goods can be returned or replaced.
For Returning of Merchandise
1. When merchandise is received, which is incomplete or defective,
the supervisor will return the materials to the supplier or to the
store where it was bought and make arrangements with the
vendor for a replacement.
For Making an inventory report of the materials
1. All materials received must be listed and be reported to monitor
how many materials are already on hand, purchased, or damaged.
2. Effective management checks are an essential means of assuring
the integrity and security of beneficial processes. They are also
useful in identifying training needs, indicating possible
weaknesses in the procedure, and ensuring the section meets its
accuracy target set for Best Value Performance Indicators
purposes.
What is a Quality checker?
The Quality checker is the person who will record the date of receipt,
name of the materials purchased, quantity, and official receipt number, the
signature of the person who bought the materials, and signed his name
afterward. The Quality checker will identify if the materials are in good
condition or damaged or needing replacements. This will also be recorded in his

10
report.

This is the example of the Log Report form that will be completed by the
Quality checker.

SPECIFICATION OF MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS

Components Descriptions

VGA (VIDEO GRAPHICS ARRAY) Created way back

in the 1980s; the VGA connection cable was the
standard cable used to connect a computer to a
monitor. More recently, it has faded out of popularity
due to the gradual shift towards digital connections
over analog. Still, if you look at any video card or
display apparatus, there is a good chance you'll see a
VGA port. VGA connections can be identified by 15
pins arranged in three (3) rows with five (5) on each
row. Each row corresponds to the three (3) different

color channels used in the display: red, green, and
blue.

DVI (DIGITAL VISUAL INTERFACE)

The DVI connection became the successor to VGA as
technology moved away from analog towards digital.
Digital displays, like LCD, proved to be higher
quality, which soon became the market standard for
home pictures.
Captured by: Lieza Mae Olaguir

11
DVI connectors come in 3 varieties.

DVI-A can transmit analog signals, allowing it to be

backward compatible with VGA (useful for CRT
monitors and LCDs of lower quality).

DVI-D can transmit the newer digital signals.

DVI-I is capable of both analog and digital. In some

instances, you may need a VGA-to-DVI or DVI-to-
Captured by: Lieza Mae Olaguir VGA converter cable.

HDMI (HIGH DEFINITION MULTIMEDIA

INTERFACE)
In the past decade, high-definition broadcasts
became the new standard of what it means to be high
quality. Unlike VGA and DVI, HDMI sends both video
Captured by: Lieza Mae Olaguir and audio signals together.
The signals are digital-only; thus, HDMI is only
compatible with newer devices.

HDMI connectors come in 4 types:

Type A is the most popular. This connector can be

identified by its 19 pins on the male head. Type A is
compatible with single-link DVI-D connections.

Type B is larger than Type A, coming in at 29 pins

on the male head. Type B is compatible with dual-
link DVI-D connections.

Type C is a 19-pin connector that's most often used

with portable devices, like camcorders and digital
cameras. Type D looks similar to a micro-USB cord.
It also has 19 pins.

USB (UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS)

From left to right: micro USB, mini USB, type B
standard USB, and type A standard USB (both
female and male).
The USB connection is quite possibly the most
pervasive connection type in today's world. Nearly
Captured by: Lieza Mae Olaguir every form of computer peripheral device —
keyboards, mice, headsets, flash drives, wireless
adapters, etc. — can be connected to your computer
through a USB port.

12
The design has evolved over the years, which means
there are multiple versions of USB available:
USB 1.0/1.1 can transmit data at speeds up to 12
Mbps.
USB 2.0 can transmit data at speeds up to 480 Mbps
and is compatible with older versions of USB. The
most common type found in the market.
USB 3.0 can transmit data at speeds up to 4.8 Gbps.
It is compatible with previous versions of USB. The
mini and micro USB variants are most often used
with smaller, portable devices like PDAs, phones, and
digital cameras. The standard USB connectors are
more commonly used on devices that tend to remain
plugged in, like external hard drives, keyboards, and
mice.
IDE (INTEGRATED DRIVE ELECTRONICS)
IDE cables were used to connect storage devices to a
motherboard. If you've ever opened up an old hard
drive, then you likely know what an IDE connector
looks like. It's the wide cable that looks like a ribbon
with more than 2 plugs.
The connectors on an IDE cable have 40 pins; the
smaller 2.5" drive variety uses a form-factor version
of the IDE that has 40 pins.

SATA (SERIAL ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

ATTACHMENT)
Newer hard drives will likely use SATA ports over IDE
ports. SATA was designed to succeed IDE.
Compared to IDE, SATA provides higher data transfer
speeds. Your motherboard needs to be compatible
with SATA, and nowadays, most of them are.
Two connectors can identify a standard SATA cable,
each having seven (7) pins and an empty notch. It
looks like a subtle L-shape.
ESATA (EXTERNAL SERIAL ADVANCED
TECHNOLOGY ATTACHMENT)
eSATA technology is an extension of, or improvement
on, the SATA cable — it makes SATA technology
available in an external form. In reality, eSATA is not
much different from SATA, but it allows connections
to devices like external hard drives and optical
drives. This is useful because eSATA offers speeds
much faster than most FireWire and USB
alternatives.

13
FIREWIRE
FireWire is similar to that of USB, high-speed data
transfer for computer peripherals. High bandwidth
devices, like printers and scanners, will benefit from
FireWire. For whatever reason, FireWire is not as
widespread as USB.
FireWire cables come in two forms:
1394a (which has a transfer speed of 400 Mbps) and
1394b (which has a transfer speed of 800 Mbps).

ETHERNET
Ethernet cables are used to set up local area
networks. They're used to connect routers to modems
and computers. If you've ever tried to install or fix a
home router, you've likely dealt with an Ethernet
computer cable.

Three (3) varieties

Cat 5 cables are the most basic type and provide

speeds of either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps.

Cat 5e, which means Cat 5 Enhanced, allows for

faster data transmission than its predecessor. It caps
at 1,000 Mbps.

Cat 6 is the latest and offers the best performance of

Captured by: Lieza Mae Olaguir the three. It's capable of supporting 10 Gbps speeds.

RESISTOR
A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical
component that implements electrical resistance as a
circuit element. In electronic circuits, resistors are
used to reduce current flow, adjust signal levels, to
divide voltages, active bias elements, and terminate
transmission lines, among other uses.

CAPACITOR
Its function is to store the electrical energy and give
this energy again to the circuit when necessary. In
other words, it charges and discharges the electric
charge stored in it. Besides this, the functions of a
capacitor are as follows: It blocks the flow of Direct
Current (D.C.) and permits the flow of Alternating
Current (A.C.).

14
INTEGRATED CIRCUIT (I.C.)

An integrated circuit (I.C.), sometimes called a chip

or microchip, is a semiconductor wafer on which
thousands or millions of tiny resistors, capacitors,
and transistors are fabricated. An I.C. can function
as an amplifier, oscillator, timer, counter, computer
memory, or microprocessor.

WORKPLACE PROCEDURE

Workplace Procedure is a set of written instructions that identifies the health

and safety issues that may arise from the jobs and tasks that make up a system of
work.

A safe working procedure should be written when:

1. Designing a new job or task
2. Changing a job or task
3. Introducing new equipment
4. Reviewing a procedure when problems have been identified, an
example from an accident or incident investigation

The safe working procedure should identify:

 The teacher for the task or job and the students who will undertake the task
 The task that is to be undertaken that pose risks
 The equipment to be used in these tasks
 The control measures that have been formulated for these tasks
 Any training or qualifications needed to undertake the task
 The personal protective equipment to be worn
 Action to be undertaken to address safety issues that may arise while
undertaking the task

Following the specific procedure is very important to perform a given operation. The
students will also be capable of participating in and contributing to OHS
management issues. The table below will show the different elements to note and
with their corresponding criteria to be able to identify occupational health and
safety hazards, and assess risk, as well as following the instructions and
procedures in the workplace with minimal supervision.

What is Quality Standards?

Standards are sets of rules that layout specifications of measurements, plan

of activity, materials, and execution or describe the nature of materials, items, or
frameworks. These principles should cover the exhibition desires for the item for
specific applications. The purpose of standards is to give at least minimum quality,
safety, or execution details to guarantee generally uniform items and performance
and to remove ambiguity with regards to the appropriateness of certain business
items for specific applications. Keeping gauges may lessen the hazard of mistakes
in working.

17
In Hardware, the quality of the product is very important. The durability of the
work depends on the quality of its components parts and the assembly skills of
those who install it. The use of reasonable equipment and items must be supported
by sufficient degrees of preparing individuals who use them with the goal that they
can distinguish and utilize just suitable items. There are factors to consider when
judging a product that could address the following questions below;

 Is the product or Hardware under consideration suitable for the

application or purpose?
 Will it be harmful to the health of the community in its normal use?
 Is there a risk of this Hardware being released into the environment
(e.g. the water or air) in the first instance or after the working life of
the product or Hardware has expired?

In the Production process, quality assurance is considered. The quality

assurance will cover all activities from design, development, production,
installation, servicing, and documentation. This introduced the rules: "fit for
purpose" and "do it right the first time". It includes the regulation of the quality of
raw materials, assemblies, products and components; services related to
production; and management, production, and inspection processes.

A. Failure Testing - A vital procedure to perform on an entire consumer

product is failure testing, the activity of an item until it fizzles, frequently
under burdens, for example, expanding vibration, temperature, and
stickiness. This uncovered numerous unforeseen shortcomings in an
item, and the information is utilized to drive designing and assembling
process upgrades.

B. Statistical Control- Numerous associations utilize measurable

procedure control to carry the association to Six Sigma levels of value, at
the end of the day, with the goal that the probability of a surprising
disappointment is limited to six standard deviations on the ordinary
circulation. Customary factual procedure controls in assembling
activities, as a rule, continue by arbitrarily inspecting and testing a small
amount of the yield. Fluctuations of basic resistances are constantly
followed, and fabricating forms are adjusted before awful parts can be
delivered.

C. Company Quality- The company-wide quality approach places emphasis

on three aspects; (1) elements such as controls, job management,
adequate processes, performance and integrity criteria and identification
of records, (2) competence such as knowledge, skills, experience, and
qualifications, (3) soft elements such as personnel integrity, confidence,
organizational culture, motivation, team spirit, and quality relationships.
The quality of the outputs is at risk if any of these three aspects are
deficient in any way.

D. Quality Control- the most necessary inspection control of all in cases

where, despite statistical quality control techniques or quality
improvements implemented sales decrease.

18
In Final product, the quality system elements required by ISO 9000 in the
making of the final product are important. Below is the list of quality system
requirements.

Management - defines and document commitment, policy and objectives,

responsibility responsibility and authority, verification resources and
personnel.
Quality system - establish and maintain a documented quality system,
ensuring that products conform to specified requirements.
Contract Review - ensure that customer's contractual requirements are
evaluated and met.
Product - plan, control, and verify product development to ensure that
development specified requirements are met.
Document - system for control and identification of all documents
control regarding quality, e.g. procedures, instructions, and
specifications.
Purchasing - ensure that purchased products conform to specified
requirements.
Product - system to identify and control traceability of products at all
identification stages from raw materials through production to the final
and traceability product as delivered to the customer.
Process control - ensure and plan the control of production, which directly
affects quality by documented work instructions,
monitoring, and control of processes.
Inspection and - inspect and test incoming products, intermediate and final
testing product; establish product conformance to specified
requirements and identify non-conforming products;
maintain inspection and test records.
Inspection, - selection and control of equipment to ensure reliability and
measuring and accuracy in measuring data.
test equipment
Inspection and - for the whole process, the products shall be identified and
test status clearly marked concerning test status, including indication
of conformance or non-conformance.
Control of non- - Identification, documentation, evaluation, isolation (if
conforming possible) and disposition of non- conforming
products products.
Corrective - Prevention of reoccurrence of failures (non-
actions conformance).
Handling, - Protection of the quality of the product during handling,
storage storage, packaging, and delivery.
packaging, and
delivery
Quality records - Records, including those which demonstrate that the
specified requirements have been met, shall be controlled
and maintained.
Internal Quality - Regular, planned internal audits shall be carried out,
Audits documented and recorded to verify the effectiveness of the
quality system.
Training - Training requirements at all levels shall be identified and
the training planned, conducted, and recorded.
Cleaning and - Although not required by the ISO 9000 standards, these two
Disinfection points should be given special attention in all food

19
companies.
Personal - we are maintaining cleanliness of one's body and clothing to
hygiene preserve over-all health and well-being.

In customer service, a progression of activities intended to upgrade the

degree of consumer satisfaction, the inclination that an item or administration has
met the client's desire. Its significance changes by item, industry, and client.
