WHAT IS COPYRIGHT?
 Copyright is an established law
which secures an author’s right to
decide how their creative works, such
as written works, music, films or

HOW DOES COPYRIGHT WORK?
 Copyright protection applies to all original works, even if
the author has not applied for a license.
 Copying or distributing of licensed works are permitted
only at the consent of the copyright holder.
FAIR USE
 Fair use enables individuals to use a small portion of
copyright works without seeking the permission of the
original author.
 However, works must not be altered in any way, and
attribution must be given to the original author.
COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
 Copyright infringement is the act of
breaching copyright law; through the
copying or usage of original works
without first seeking permission from
the author.
 Copyright holders have the right to
file law suits against offenders. This is
a serious offense with tough
penalties.

WHAT IS CREATIVE COMMONS?
 Creative Commons comprises of six (6) different license
combinations from which authors can choose from and
register their works under.
 CC works do not require permission from the original
author, however, the licenses' specified terms must be
followed, & work must be attributed to them.
THE SIX CREATIVE COMMONS
LICENSES
1. Attribution (CC BY)
Material can be adapted, distributed & built upon for
commercial uses, as long as credit is given to the
creator.
2. Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA)
Material can be adapted, distributed & built upon for
commercial uses. However, adaptations must be
licensed with the same conditions, and credit is given
to the creator.
3. Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC)
Material can be adapted, distributed & built upon, for non-
commercial uses, and credit is given to the creator.
4. Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA)
Material can be remixed, distributed & built upon for non-
commercial uses. However, adaptations must be licensed with
the same conditions, and credit given to the creator.
5. Attribution-NoDerivs (CC BY-ND)
Material can be copied & distributed for commercial uses,
however work must be unaltered, and credit given to the
creator.
6. Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-ND)
Material can be copied & distributed, but for non-
commercial uses. Work must be unaltered, and credit given
to the creator.
