LESSON PROPER
Learning Objectives:
After reading the Information Sheet, you must be able to:
1. Install Operating System (OS) in accordance with established installation
procedures and to comply with end-user requirements.
2. Install peripheral devices in accordance with manufacturer’s instruction and/or
OS installation procedures
3. Configure peripheral devices in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
and/or OS installation procedures
4. Access OS and driver updates or patches in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendations and requirements
5. Install OS and driver updates or patches in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendations and requirements
6. Check the quality of work undertaken in accordance with established
procedures
When you turn on a newly assembled computer that does not have an
Operating System installed in it or a computer with a defective OS, it will see a black
screen containing a prompt that says “Reboot and Select proper Boot device or
Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key”. This means that
your hardware does not recognize or it cannot locate the operating system on your
computer. Once this prompt is displayed it only means one thing, you need to install
or repair your Operating System. But before installing your Operating System, there
is still one step you need to complete and that is to setup the boot sequence on your
BIOS.
Note: If your computer is already displaying the prompt above, turn off your
computer.
2. In the Boot Sequence and select the Optical Drive as the first item on the
list, followed by Hard Drive and others. Selecting the optical drive will tell your
BIOS to check the optical drive first for a bootable disk to install your
Operating System before accessing your hard drive.
3. Setup the date and time of your computer. Setting the time is important so
that your computer can access the Internet and perform updates.
4. After setting up everything in the BIOS, insert your bootable disk on the
optical drive, save the changes on your BIOS setup an exit. This will
automatically restart your computer. Your computer will now boot from the
optical drive and open the installation. Your screen will display “Windows is
loading files”.
Note: After installing the OS, go back to BIOS and set your primary boot
sequence to hard disk drive.
4. Select CUSTOM (Advanced) installation. The next page will display the
details of your hard disk drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SDD). This is the
part where your OS will be installed.
5. The next step is to perform partitioning, select the unallocated space then
click Drive Option (Advanced). Click on New then set the partition size.
Click Apply. Notice that a System Reserved Partition is automatically
created with a size of 100 MB.
Note:
It is advisable to have to partition on your HDD to have a back-up
space for your data files to be stored in case you need to reformat or
re-install your OS.
The size of your Local C or primary drive can be 30% of the total size
of your HDD. Example if your HDD size is 500000 MB then the size of
your Local C can be set to 150000 MB.
6. Repeat step 5 for the remaining unallocated disk space, keep the default
size set on your screen and click Apply. Select your primary drive then click
Next.
7. The computer will complete the installation process. Note that this part of
the installation usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes to finish. Your computer
will restart multiple times and you might notice some flashes on the screen.
This is normal. Do not press any key and just let the computer complete the
installation.
Figure 3.1-13 – Operating System Expansion and Installation
8. After your computer restarts, it will display the initial configuration of your
Operating System. Set your user name and computer name then click Next.
9. Setup the password. This part is optional, you can skip and perform this later
then Click Next.
11. You now reached the final configuration settings. If you are online you can
select Use Recommended Settings but if not just select Ask me later to
perform the updates on a later date. Click Next.
12. Lastly, review the Time and Date settings then make the necessary changes
and the installation is complete.
1. Insert your Device Driver Disk on the optical drive, your computer will read
the disk and will automatically display the installation window.
2. The installation program will look for available device drivers for your
hardware and display as summary, click on Install All Device Drivers and
wait until the installation is complete.
Operating Systems
Installation and upgrade of your operating system and device drivers are
already complete. The next thing you need to do is to install the necessary
application software that you need to use. Application software installation will be
discussed on the next module.

PERFORMANCE TASK
Performance Task Sheet 3.1-1
Title: Install and Update Operating System and Drivers for Peripheral Device
Performance Objective:
At the end of the task the learner will be able to:
Install operating system and drivers for peripheral device
Update operating systems and drivers for peripheral device
Supplies/Materials :
Computer System
Installers (Windows XP/7/8/10, Device Driver)
Information Sheet
Performance Task Sheet
Performance Rubrics
Steps/Procedure:
1. Install Windows 7 OS on your computer using your own installers
2. Install Device Drivers for your computer
3. Perform Updates on both OS and device drivers
4. Check the quality of work undertaken
Computer hardware will not be useful without the computer software. To give
life to the computer system, you have to install an operating system and setup its
device drivers. Installing operating system and peripheral device drivers is an
important process in order to complete your computer set-up. You have to make
sure that the installers or programs you use are compatible with the hardware
components of the computer. Your installers or disk containing your installers should
be in good condition and functioning well. Failure to do so will result to failed
installation.
In this module, you were able to learn how to follow instructions set by the
manufacturers. You were able to enhance and practice your computer or technical
skills and at the same time improve your attention to details. You also learn how to
deal with end-user needs and make sure to meet their standards when installing the
operating system.
You also have to keep in mind that maintaining your computer software is
important. You have to schedule the updates in order to keep your computer
functioning at its best and prevent it from viruses, worms and other malicious
programs.
At the end of this module, you were able to acquire the knowledge, skills and
attitude needed in order to pass the assessment for Core 1 Competency of
Computer Systems Servicing NC II. Once completed, you are now ready to comply
with the requirements of the three (3) remaining competencies.
