QUICK RECAP OF PREVIOUS LESSONS:

Operating System Software is a software that controls the way computer

part works together and manages the files and programs in the computer. Operating
System or OS is the most important software that runs on a computer. It is
responsible for the coordination, management, and sharing of hardware resources
and tasks in the computer. Examples of this includes Windows, Apple Mac OS, and
Linux.

Common Operating Systems

1. Microsoft Windows is a graphical operating system developed by Microsoft

consisting of several families of operating systems, such as Windows XP, 7, 8
and 10.
2. Macintosh Operating System is an operating system for Macintosh
computers which are series of computers made by Apple Inc.
3. Linux is a free software and was developed as an open source program with
the principle, wherein the source code can be freely modified, used,
distributed and opened by all.

Device Driver is a program that allows a particular hardware device to work

and communicate with the computer system. Each and every device, whether inside
or outside the system unit, requires this program to run and operate properly.

BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is a program pre-installed on Windows-

based computers that the computer uses to start up. The CPU accesses the BIOS
even before the operating system is loaded. It checks all your hardware connections
and locate all you devices. If everything is OK, the BIOS loads the operating system
into the computer’s memory and finishes the boot-up process.
THINGS TO PREPARE BEFORE THE INSTALLATION
 Be sure your OS and device drivers is compatible with your hardware device.
 Prepare all your installers (Bootable Disk for your OS, device drivers) and
your fully assembled computer system with an optical drive or external optical
drive
 If possible, prepare the product key or license key for your installers

Figure 3.1-1 – Insert Boot Media

Have you encountered the message or prompt displayed above?

What are the instances where in you encountered this prompt?
What does the prompt means?

When you turn on a newly assembled computer that does not have an
Operating System installed in it or a computer with a defective OS, it will see a black
screen containing a prompt that says “Reboot and Select proper Boot device or
Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key”. This means that
your hardware does not recognize or it cannot locate the operating system on your
computer. Once this prompt is displayed it only means one thing, you need to install
or repair your Operating System. But before installing your Operating System, there
is still one step you need to complete and that is to setup the boot sequence on your
BIOS.

Note: If your computer is already displaying the prompt above, turn off your
computer.

 HOW TO SET THE BOOT SEQUENCE

1. Turn on your computer and wait for it to load until you see the initial BIOS
page (see figure below). This page displays the key to access the BIOS
Setup. Usually the key includes ESC, DEL, F12, or F2 depending on the
computer hardware assembled.

Figure 3.1-2 – BIOS Page

Based on the figure above, the key to press is DEL to enter the BIOS Setup.
After pressing the key, the BIOS setup will be displayed (see image below).

Figure 3.1-3 – BIOS Setup

2. In the Boot Sequence and select the Optical Drive as the first item on the
list, followed by Hard Drive and others. Selecting the optical drive will tell your
BIOS to check the optical drive first for a bootable disk to install your
Operating System before accessing your hard drive.

Figure 3.1-4 – Boot Sequence

3. Setup the date and time of your computer. Setting the time is important so
that your computer can access the Internet and perform updates.

Figure 3.1- 5– Date and

Time Setup

4. After setting up everything in the BIOS, insert your bootable disk on the
optical drive, save the changes on your BIOS setup an exit. This will
automatically restart your computer. Your computer will now boot from the
optical drive and open the installation. Your screen will display “Windows is
loading files”.

Figure 3.1-6 – Windows loading files

Note: After installing the OS, go back to BIOS and set your primary boot
sequence to hard disk drive.

 INSTALLING MICROSOFT OPERATING SYSTEM

1. When you get to the first part of the Windows setup, choose the language to
install, time and currency format, keyboard and input method. Click Next

part where your OS will be installed.

Figure 3.1-10 – Type of installation

There are two (2) types of installation UPGRADE and CUSTOM

(ADVANCED). Upgrade installation is selected when you wanted to upgrade
your existing operating system to a newer version or if you want to repair your
existing operating system. Custom (Advanced) installation is selected if your
computer does not have an existing operating system and if you want to
reformat your hard disk and create partitions.

5. The next step is to perform partitioning, select the unallocated space then
click Drive Option (Advanced). Click on New then set the partition size.
Click Apply. Notice that a System Reserved Partition is automatically
created with a size of 100 MB.

Partition is an area on a storage device that can be formatted with a file

system and is identified with a letter of the alphabet. Example: Local Drive C,
Local D:
Partitioning is to divide a HDD or SSD into multiple logical storage units
treating one storage device as if it were multiple.
Figure 3.1-11 – Partitioning

Note:
 It is advisable to have to partition on your HDD to have a back-up
space for your data files to be stored in case you need to reformat or
re-install your OS.
 The size of your Local C or primary drive can be 30% of the total size
of your HDD. Example if your HDD size is 500000 MB then the size of
your Local C can be set to 150000 MB.

6. Repeat step 5 for the remaining unallocated disk space, keep the default
size set on your screen and click Apply. Select your primary drive then click
Next.
