I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
This section discusses safety in the laboratory Safety guidelines help protect individuals
from accidents and injury. They also help to protect equipment from damage. Some of these
guidelines are designed to protect the environment from contamination caused by improperly
discarded materials.
Safe working conditions help prevent injury to people and damage to computer equipment.
A safe workspace is clean, organized, and properly lighted. Everyone must understand and follow
safety procedures.
1.5 Obtain tools, equipment and testing devices needed to carry out installation work in
accordance with established procedures and check for correct operation and safety
Objectives:
1. Enumerate the Safety Handling Procedure of Computer Parts.
2. Locate Safety Handling Procedure of Computer Parts.
3. Discuss the importance of Safety Handling Procedure of Computer Parts.
III. ACTIVITIES
A. LESSON INFORMATION
Students must comply with health and safety guidelines for their own well-being and that of their
fellow students as well as the integrity of the electronic equipment. Since many of the hands-on
activities deal with electricity and fragile computer components, the following rules must be
followed.

Warnings
✓ Do not try to open a power source unit or try to fix it or experiment with the parts if you
are not familiar with working on high voltage circuits. Power supplies contain
capacitors that can hold dangerous charges for several minutes. Take your unit to a
qualified electrician or, better yet, recycle it and replace it with a rebuilt unit. The cost
of repairing a damaged power source is very often higher than the cost of a
replacement unit.
✓ Sometimes a damaged power supply can contribute to reboot, causing only minor
blockages and power outages. If this is the case, you should try to find other problems
before changing the power source. While it is always better to replace a power source
that you have a good reason to think you is failing, you have to make sure the problem
is not because of other factors.

3. Use an anti-static wrist strap or
discharge yourself by touching a
grounded metal object such as a
computer casing to remove static
charge, which may damage
sensitive devices.
Tip
If you plan on working on the inside of the computer more than once, we highly recommend
purchasing and using an antistatic wristband.
Zero potential - Most importantly, make sure you and the computer are at zero potential by
continuously touching an unpainted metal surface of the chassis or the computer power
supply case.
Standing - Always be standing when working inside the computer. If you are sitting on a chair
or the floor, it can generate more electrostatic.
Cords - Disconnect everything from the back of the computer (e.g., power cord, monitor, and
USB cables).
Clothes - Make sure not to wear any clothing that conducts an electrical charge, such as a
wool sweater.
Weather - Electrical storms can increase the ESD risk; if it can wait, try not to work on a
computer during an electrical storm.
Accessories - To help reduce ESD and help prevent other problems, it is also a good idea to
remove all jewelry.
Surface - Standing on a hard surface, and the computer or other electrostatic sensitive
devices should be on the table.

V. ANSWER KEY
Task 1:
1. Wear proper apparel. Avoid acrylic or wool sweaters when working with electronic parts. Do
not wear loose fitting clothing, rings, bracelets etc.
2.Unplug all computer equipment and peripherals before opening any covering cases.
3. Use an anti-static wrist strap or discharge yourself by touching a grounded metal object such
as a computer casing to remove static charge, which may damage sensitive devices.
4. When removing any cables, wires or ribbons, make sure to grasp the wire at the base or head
to keep it from breaking.
5. Do not use excessive force if things don't quite slip into place. Or Do not force components
into computer ports.
6. Hold the components on the edges and do not touch the Integrated Circuit (IC) parts.
7. Power supplies produce several levels of voltage. Read the information on the power supply
carefully and make sure that the power supply you are using is appropriate for the application.
8. Retain all screws during disassembly in containers such as film canisters for proper re-
assembly.
9. Electronic components should never become hot. Hot components means that there is a
problem with the circuit. Disconnect any power immediately.
10. Use brush, compressed air or blower in cleaning the computer system
12. Clean the area before and after using it to maintain sanitation and prevent accidents.
