At the end of the day, the students should be able to acquire 85% of the subject

1. Demonstrate different methods of device driver installation .
2. Appreciate importance of knowing how to install device drivers on a computer.
3. Illustrate how to properly install or update device driver .

B. PRESENTATION.
1. Motivation:
HEADBands!

The class will be group into 2 .Each groups will be given equal number of words written on a
piece of paper .A group representative student must stick the note to her forehead without
looking at it. The goal is to figure out what the term on the forehead is. The group with the most
number of word guess will be the winner.

2. Raised up question:
 What is device driver ?
 How to install a device driver in a computer ?
 Why it is important to know the installation methods of device driver?

3. Definition of terms:
 Hub- device that links multiple computers and devices together
 Interface- point where two systems, subjects, organizations, etc.
meet and interact.
 Setup-the way in which something, especially an organization or
equipment, is organized, planned, or arranged.
 Hardware Wizard- a tool that allows you to do multiple operations on
groups of hardware channels.
 INF File - a text file in a driver package

Application and device drivers installation procedure

DEVICE DRIVER
•A device driver is a piece of software that allows your operating
system to start, use and control a hardware device.
•driver provides a software interface to hardware devices

I. Methods of installing device drivers

1. Running the Setup. Device drivers are automatically installed for all detected
devices during installation of Windows 2000 system on the server computer

2. Starting the computer. Whenever the server is started, new devices are detected and
their device drivers are automatically installed

3. Scanning for new hardware.Add/Remove Hardware Wizard can be used to perform the
hardware-detection process and desired device driver installation

4. Manual installation. You can use the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard to specify the
device you want to install, or you can right-click the .INF file that comes with the driver
and choose Install.

TYPES OF DEVICE DRIVERS

1.Kernel-mode Device Driver


-This Kernel-mode device driver includes some generic hardware that loads with an
operating system as part of the OS.
- BIOS, motherboard, processor

2.User- mode device drivers


-user also brings some devices for use during the using of a system that devices
need device drivers to functions

-Plug and Play


Purpose of a Device Driver
The main purpose of device drivers is to provide abstraction by acting as a translator
between a hardware device and the applications or operating systems that use it.

For further explanation :


When you get a peripheral device such as a printer, scanner, keyboard or modem, the
device comes together with a driver CD which needs to be installed before the device
starts working.
