Testing Electronic
6 Components (TEC)
A future computer technician like you will need to understand the proper
practices on how a computer system works. It is important that an early detection
of computer system errors must be addressed immediately to avoid further damage
to computer electronics and electrical components.
Before we proceed to the new lesson, let’s check your understanding of the
different components by answering the activity below.
4
What’s In
Instructions: Determine what is being described in each number. Choose the correct
answer from the box below. Write the letter of the correct answers in your notebook.
1. What command is used to stop RAM and CPU consumption in task manager’s
running programs?
2. What process must be done to test and to check wire connections, damaged
components, quality of soldering and identify specific wire in an electric circuit?
3. If you hear continuous beeping sound from your computer system, what could
have been the cause of error?
4. What appropriate tool will you use for testing circuit board’s components to
measure its input and output voltages?
5. What is the first step to detect computer component errors during start up?
What’s New
The most basic test is to switch the system on to check if it starts without
errors. When some of the components are not working properly, ICT professionals
use different tools and utilities to check that all is well with the system after an
installation.
5
What is It
The use of diagnostic tools is essential to check tools and utilities to ensure
that everything in the computer system works well. Diagnostic tools are used to test
and diagnose equipment’s. Proper preparations and handling of these tools with
personal protective devices will secure all components to be tested in a well-managed
space. Below are examples of Diagnostic Tools.
Software tools are a variety of software tools that can be used to troubleshoot
problems in relation to Windows operating systems to create, maintain, debug, or
support other applications and programs. Examples of these are Embold, Linx, Atom,
Cloud 9, GitHub, NetBeans, Bootstrap, and Node.js.
6
In testing components, here is a set of steps to guide you through what needs
to be done to thoroughly test the installation.
1. Gather test information to record all the results of your test procedures
and finding out what happens.
2. Validating the test information requires checking the data gathered from
the tests and make sure it is correct.
3. Responding to test information is the most important because you need to
recognize when a test shows a problem or becomes successful.
4. The formal step is to check the specification for the installation to make
sure that it has been met. Request for an upgraded computer must be
successful and based on industry standards to avoid system component
failures.
Documenting computer components testing needs proper recording of results.
Once computer components testing is done, you have to ask the following questions?
Do you encounter any problem? Yes or No? If Yes, then proceed to
appropriate procedure in removing and replacing parts. If No, then proceed to
observe the proper boot routine and start your computer.
When the boot routine is running, try to observe some of the following problem
indications and perform the following steps:
1. Does the power supply fan run normally? If Yes, proceed to boot up. If No, then
troubleshoot the system power supply.
2. Try to look at your keyboard and watch the Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock.
Is there a light indicator? If Yes, then proceed to the system running program. If
No, try to troubleshoot the keyboard cable, if it is connected. Most likely your
system power supply is non-operational.
3. Try to listen to a beep sound when a computer system is turned on. Do you hear
a sound? If Yes, identify how many beeping sounds do you hear. Beep code is a
series of beeps that indicates an error condition. of the different parts of the
computer systems. You may watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGqN-
tCU5Vo for some beep codes reference to identify faulty computer system
components
4. Try to observe your monitor if there is a light indicator. If Yes, make sure it is not
red. If it is Red, it might be turned off. If Green, the monitor is working properly.
But when the light indicator never showed on your screen, then the monitor may
not be plugged in. Try to check the cable.
5. Verify the chips, expansion cards, and other sockets or connectors if it is properly
seated. If Not, then remove your computer cover, and try to remove and return
the chipset.
For all these undertakings, proper recording of results must be kept for proper
documentation and must be submitted to appropriate personnel or authority. Your
line manager or the health and safety representative will be in-charge for the
replacement of defective components.
