What is It

TESTING INSTALLED EQUIPMENT / DEVICES (COMPONENTS)

As a computer technician, you may need a decent understanding of the

health and safety regulations from ahead of time in your career, in order that
you understand the great practices demanded by law. Specifically, you need
to:

✓ report any accidents

✓ take charge of your own health and safety when moving heavy components
✓ not cause any electrical hazards
✓ ensure that workstations meet safety requirements.

You need to stick to health and safety regulations as they're going to

help to protect you and others and can avoid any unnecessary proceeding for
reckless and unsafe working practices. If you identify any health and safety
problems, you ought to tell your line manager or the health and safety
representative immediately.

Diagnostic tools are used to test and diagnose equipment.

Diagnostic tools include the following:

Digital multimeter is a device that can take many types

of measurements. It tests the integrity of circuits and the
quality of electricity in computer components. A digital
multimeter displays the information on an LCD or LED.

A loopback adapter, also called a loopback plug, tests the

basic functionality of computer ports. The adapter is
specific to the port that you want to test.

4 NegOr_Q4_CSS11_Module1-4_V2
A toner probe is a two-part tool. The toner part is connected
to a cable at one end using specific adapters, such as an RJ-
45, coaxial, or metal clips. The toner generates a tone that
travels the length of the cable. The probe part traces the
cable. When the probe is in near proximity to the cable to
which the toner is attached, the tone can be heard through a
speaker in the probe.

Software Tools

Like hardware tools, there are a variety of software tools that can be
used to help technicians pinpoint and troubleshoot problems. Many of these
tools are free and several come with the Windows operating system.

Disk Management Tools

Software tools help diagnose computer and network problems and

determine which computer device is not functioning correctly. A technician
must be able to use a range of software tools to diagnose problems, maintain
hardware, and protect the data stored on a computer.

You must be able to identify which software to use in different

situations. Disk management tools help detect and correct disk errors,
prepare a disk for data storage, and remove unwanted files.

Format: Prepares a hard drive to store information.

ScanDisk or CHKDSK: Checks the integrity of files and folders on a hard
drive by scanning the file system. These tools might also check the disk
surface for physical errors.

Defragmentation: Optimizes space on a hard drive to allow faster access to

programs and data.
Disk Cleanup: Clears space on a hard drive by searching for files that can
be safely deleted.

System File Checker (SFC): A command-line tool that scans the operating
system critical files and replaces files that are corrupted.

Testing Computer System

The best way to find out what's wrong is to take a proactive approach:
Check under your PC's hood with the following mostly free diagnostic tools,
and see if anything is amiss--before disaster strikes.
5 NegOr_Q4_CSS11_Module1-4_V2
Three Major Components of Computer System:
Hardware- physical parts or components of a computer.
Software- instructions that tell a computer what to do.
Software comprises the entire set of programs, procedures, and
routines associated with the operation of a computer system,
Firmware- permanent software programmed into a read-only memory.

Test Your Hardware

Checking your computer hardware and its peripherals

1. Computer Monitor and its peripherals

How to run a Monitor Self-Test.

1. Power off both your computer and the monitor.

2. Disconnect the signal cable from the back of the computer.
3. Power on the

monitor. Note:

Depending on your monitor, While in the Self-Test mode, the monitor's

LED power indicator remains on and the Check Signal Cable figure moves
around on the screen.

If your monitor alternate between 2 boxes Analog and Digital that is

normal, as some monitors supports both Digital and analog signal.

Test Results:
a) If you see any of the above check cable signals, that mean the
problem is not related to your monitor, please check your graphics
card. If you see the first figure with one of the colors missing, that
means your monitor requires service.

b) If you are unable to see any of the figures. But the light of the monitor
is on, it means your monitor requires service.

2. Keyboard and Mouse

How to Test a Laptop Keyboard

Testing your computer's keyboard involves more than simply seeing if

the keys work. Opening a word processor and typing a few lines won't really
tell you anything; if all the keys work correctly, there could still be an issue
with your keyboard's device driver that isn't obvious. To successfully test
your computer's keyboard, you need to do so in the Microsoft Windows Device
Manager hardware management utility.
6 NegOr_Q4_CSS11_Module1-4_V2
Step 1

Click "Start."

Step 2

Click "Control

Panel." Step 3

Click "System."

Step 4

Click "Open Device

Manager." Step 5

Right-click on the listing for your computer's keyboard. Select the "Scan for
Hardware Changes" option from the menu. The Device Manager will now test
your computer's keyboard. If an "error" icon appears next to the listing, there
is a problem with your computer's keyboard. Right-click the listing for the
device again and select "Properties" for more information about the specifics
of the error.

3.Check the RAM

RAM or Random Access Memory is one of the most important

hardware component of every computer. It is the small piece of hardware
that experts would really recommend for an upgrade to boost your
computer’s performance. While you can check the memory size of your
RAM from the System Properties section of the Control Panel, testing it is
a little bit complicated.

Problems in the RAM can cause “Blue Screen of Death” (BSOD) and
can even prevent your machine from booting up. If you want to test your
RAM, you can use Memtest86+ and again, the test itself isn’t that simple.
In order to perform it, you will need to create a bootable USB or CD with the
software loaded into it since the test itself works upon boot up and it will take
over 30 minutes to complete. If you want to really test the RAM of your
7 NegOr_Q4_CSS11_Module1-4_V2
computer or the one that you want to purchase, you can simply head to the
Memtest86+ website to read the instructions.

4.Check for Hard Disk Drive Or Solid State Drive Health

The Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD) contains the
operating system that is installed on your computer and once it gets some
problems, you whole machine may hang and freeze often or even fail in the
long run. It is therefore important to make your HDD/SSD in 100% health
always.

Checking for HDD/SSD health is important especially if you are

planning to purchase a used computer since you don’t really know the
current condition of the drive itself. You can find plenty of tools that can be
used to test the Hard Disk Drive or Solid State Drive in your computer and
if you have an SSD installed, you can use SSDLife to check your Solid State
Drive’s health.

For HDD, you will need to use a separate tool called HDSentinel. This
tool is designed for Hard Disk Drives and helps to identify problems,
diagnoses troubles and repairs disk drive problems before they get worst. To
download this software, you can simply visit the official Hard Disk Sentinel
website.

8 NegOr_Q4_CSS11_Module1-4_V2
5.Test CPU and GPU

The CPU and GPU are two very important hardware components in
every computer that is involved in the main processing of data, commands
and everything else in between. It is because of these two hardware
components that you are able to use Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel and
even open your favorite browser. You are also able to play games because of
them so it is therefore necessary to make sure that both of these hardware
components are in perfect condition. To test them, you can use Furmark.

If you are trying to test a low-end PC that has no dedicated GPU to

support high definition resolutions, you will need to select 1280 x 720 and if
you are testing a medium to high-end PC with a GPU/graphics card, choose
the resolutions 1280 x 720 to 1920 x 1080 full HD graphics resolution. If
your screen flickers or is distorted while the test is running, it is a sign that
there is a problem in the GPU.
To test your machine’s CPU, all you need to do is open “CPU Burner”
the hit the “Start” button to initiate the test. If your computer hangs or freezes
during the test, it means that there is problem in hardware or there is not
enough cooling system for the CPU to work smoothly.

9 NegOr_Q4_CSS11_Module1-4_V2
Test Hardware to Prevent Serious Problems

As you can see, there are both online and offline ways in testing your
computer’s hardware and both methods help ensure that your machine is in
good condition. These tests will also help you decide if a pre-loved computer
is worthy to be purchased on not

6.I/O port and devices

 Connection between the I/O port and the peripheral device

 A faulty cable between the I/O port and the peripheral device
 A faulty peripheral device
 Incorrect settings in the System Setup program
 Incorrect settings in the system's configuration files
 Faulty I/O port logic on the system board

7.Power supply Test

USE CAUTION HERE (Though you’d only be shocked with a max of 24 volts)
Plug the power supply into the wall.
Find the big 24-ish pin connector that connects to the

motherboard. Connect the GREEN wire with the adjacent BLACK

wire.

The power supply’s fan should start up. If it doesn’t then it’s dead.
If the fan starts up, then it could be the motherboard that’s dead. You can use a
multimeter to check if there is power output from the power supply
Testing Your Software
Check the different software installed in the computer.
1. Operating system
Run live updates for your operating systems to get the latest
patches and protection for your OS.
Run registry scanners to check the OS registry configuration
10 NegOr_Q4_CSS11_Module1-4_V2
2. Application

Software Check for

live updates

3. Anti-virus software

Run anti-virus

program

Check for virus signature updates

Check for spyware updates

Firmware Testing

Firmware is a computer program that is embedded in a hardware

device that provides control, monitoring and data manipulation of engineered
products and systems. The firmware contained devices provides the low-level
control program for the device. Examples of devices containing firmware are
embedded systems, computers, computer peripherals, mobile phones, etc.

Importance of Firmware testing is the certification of firmware system

meets its requirements with respect to functional correctness as well as
performance, operational, and implementational properties. Then to reduce
the risk and improve the performance.

To test the firmware

Check for the correct configuration can accomplish this by configuring

the BIOS in the computer

Error Beep codes

When a PC is first switched on or reset it performs a special diagnostic

test called a POST (Power-On Self Test), to check all components in the PC,
the POST program sends out a signal to each device initializing each device's
built-in self test procedure. 67

The POST test is a two stage process:

1. First, it will check all the basic components including among other things
the system clock, the processor, RAM, the keyboard controller and the
Video

2. After the video has been tested the BIOS will then indicate any errors
encountered by displaying either a numeric code or a text message on the
screen. When a device fails the first part of the POST, the BIOS will send a
series of beeps from the PC's speaker (internal) to inform the PC user that

11 NegOr_Q4_CSS11_Module1-4_V2
there is a problem these beeps are coded allowing the user to diagnose the
troublesome component. When the POST has been completed successfully,
the PC will make a short beep to let the user know everything is as it
should be.
