Lesson
CSS 11: Set detice boot
1 order/priority
Creparation for the installation of an Operating System to a computer, can be quite
confusing and challenging to some. However, knowing and understanding the
recommended process will eliminate this problem.
The ability to perform the necessary device and boot priority setup on a computer is
needed to be able to successfully install an Operating System.
What’s In
Try to recall the things you learned in your pretious module.
Instructions: Search the ten common words/terms used in preparing an installer
from the jumbled letters below. Write them to your activity notebook.

What’s New
Having an Operating System installed on a computer allows its user to be
able to enjoy, appreciate and maximize efficiency in works that used to take so
much time and resources.
Before a successful Operating System installation can be achieved, specific
steps need to be followed as per recommended by the Hardware and Operating
System developers.
Based on the picture below, write in your activity notebook the following
questions and answer them:
1. What does the word “CRIORITY” mean to you?
2. Write 3 of your top priorities in life based on the picture.
3. What is your number 1 priority, and why?

What is It
Detice Boot Order/Priority Setting (Preparation for OS
Installation)
When the computer starts, the system BIOS begins to check a pre-
determined list of drives and devices that may contain an operating system such as
Windows. The computer can boot an operating system from a hard drive, floppy
drive, CD or DVD optical drive, USB storage device, or a network. The order in
which the devices are checked is configurable through the BIOS setup menu.
Boot Order/Priority
The default boot order settings for the computer are configured in the factory. The
default boot order determines what the computer boots to first.
UEFI - The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a specification that
defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware.
UEFI replaces the legacy Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) firmware interface
originally present in all IBM CC-compatible personal computers
BIOS - an acronym for Basic Input/Output System and also known as the System
BIOS, ROM BIOS or CC BIOS. It is a firmware used to perform hardware
initialization during the booting process (power-on startup), and to provide runtime
services for operating systems and programs

• Network Adapter
➢ Legacy BIOS boot order

To Boot
To boot to a DVD, CD-ROM, USB device, there must be bootable files installed
or the CC might bypass the device and load what is installed on the local CC.
An “operating system not found” error message may appear if a floppy disk or
an optical disk is inserted into a computer that does not contain an operating
system. If this error occurs, remove the disk and restart the computer.
If you have installed a second hard drive and the computer does not boot,
select the hard drive which contains the operating system as first boot device in the
hard drive group.
Configuring the Boot Order/Priority
The boot order can be configured on the Advanced tab in the BIOS settings
menu. The steps for modifying the boot order may vary depending on the model of
the computer.
Steps
Follow the steps below to configure the boot order on most computers.
1. Turn on or restart the computer.
2. While the display is blank, press the “Assigned” key to Enter BIOS setup on the
computer used, to get to the BIOS settings menu.
3. The BIOS settings menu is accessible by pressing the “f2” or the “del” key on
some computers.
4. After opening the BIOS, go to the boot settings.
5. Save the settings on exit (F10).

What is It
Disk partitioning is the creation of one or more regions on a secondary
storage, so that each region can be managed separately. These regions are called
“Cartitions”.
Disk formatting is the process of preparing a data storage device such as a
hard disk drive, a solid-state drive, and a USB flash drive.
There are different Operating Systems available in the market, however for
Cersonal Computers, the widely used are the Windows Operating Systems. We will
focus on the process for Windows 10 and the still widely used Windows 7.
