Objectives:
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and procedures in testing
computer systems and networks
Explain computer system testing and inspections
Let Us Discover
Safety practices should be learned early and always adhered to in working with any
electrical and electronic device, including personal computers and its peripherals. This is for
protection as well as to the people working with and for the devices that are using it.
Observe good housekeeping in the area of the equipment during and after
maintenance or repair. Place removed covers and other parts in a safe place, away from all
personnel, while you are servicing the equipment.
Keep your tool case away from walk areas so that other people will not trip over it.
Do not wear loose clothing that can be trapped in the moving parts of an equipment. Ensure
that your sleeves are fastened or rolled up above your elbows. If your hair is long, tie it up or
use a hair net or hair cap.
Electric current from power, telephone and communication cables are often hazardous. To
avoid personal injury or equipment damage, disconnect the attached power cords,
telecommunications systems, network and modems before you open the server/workstation
covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedure.
Precautions!
Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit. First, check that it
has been powered off.
Moist floor
Power surges
Before testing the hardware components, make sure that the power cable is plugged in
properly. Some computer systems have several cables, so check if every plug is secure.
Below are some devices that must be inspected for possible errors or problems.
1. Operating System
a. Run live updates of the operating system to get the latest patches and updates
(Note: Think wisely if your OS is a crack version or NOT genuine do not RUN live
updates!)
2. Application Software
a. Check the latest updates
(Note: Make sure that application software is licensed!)
3. Antivirus Software
a. Run an antivirus program
b. Check for spyware updates
