Installing and configuring modules/add-ons
Configuration of network
Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will
disturb you while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy the
objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of this module.
2. Write on your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Writing enhances learning, that is
PARTS OF THE MOD
important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer keycard.
5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!
FOLDER REDIRECTION
Folder Redirection allows you as an administrator to point a number of special folders, such
as Documents, Music and Downloads, to locations of your choice. The most common use of this
is to locate folders such as My Documents on a network share so that it can be centrally backed
up.
Folder Redirection and Offline Files are used together to redirect the path of local folders
(such as the Documents folder) to a network location, while caching the contents locally for
increased speed and availability. Roaming User Profiles is used to redirect a user profile to a network
location. These features used to be referred to as Intellimirror.

offline button in Windows Explorer
Roaming User Profiles redirects user profiles to a file share so that users receive the
same operating system and application settings on multiple computers. When a user
signs in to a computer by using an account that is set up with a file share as the profile
path, the user's profile is downloaded to the local computer and merged with the local
profile (if present). When the user signs out of the computer, the local copy of their
profile, including any changes, is merged with the server copy of the profile. Typically,
a network administrator enables Roaming User Profiles on domain accounts.
Practical applications
Administrators can use Folder Redirection, Offline Files, and Roaming User Profiles to
centralize storage for user data and settings and to provide users with the ability to access their data
while offline or in the event of a network or server outage. Some specific applications include:
Centralize data from client computers for administrative tasks, such as using a server-
based backup tool to back up user folders and settings.
Enable users to continue accessing network files, even if there is a network or server
outage.
Optimize bandwidth usage and enhance the experience of users in branch offices who
access files and folders that are hosted by corporate servers located offsite.
Enable mobile users to access network files while working offline or over slow
networks.
New and changed functionality
The following table describes some of the major changes in Folder Redirection, Offline Files, and
Roaming User Profiles that are available in this release.

Primary computers for Folder Redirection and Roaming User Profiles
You can now designate a set of computers, known as primary computers, for each domain user,
which enables you to control which computers use Folder Redirection, Roaming User Profiles, or
both. Designating primary computers is a simple and powerful method to associate user data and
settings with particular computers or devices, simplify administrator oversight, improve data
security, and help protect user profiles from corruption.
One of the most useful things you can do is redirecting the Documents folder (or My
Documents for Windows XP and earlier). This allows you to store a user’s files on a network share,
rather than in their local user profile. This has a number of advantages, including allowing you to
back up these files centrally, and giving users access to their files even if they log on to a number of
different computers. You can couple Folder Redirection with Offline Files to ensure that people can
continue to work on their files even when they are not connected to your network.
PRINTED DEPLOYMENT
Deploying printers via Group Policy lets you manage your printers from a single console and
also gives you granular control over which printers to deploy to individual client PCs without
needing any additional software.
Numerous backup server products and services available from third-party vendors, Microsoft
Windows Server operating systems also include a built-in Windows Server Backup feature that can
be used to perform basic backup and recovery operations on backup servers.
An alternative to standard backup server software tools are online backup and recovery
services that save your network's data to a remote location in the cloud.
ALTERNATIVE ONLINE BACKUP SERVICES/ SOFTWARE

OneDrive is a file hosting service and synchronization service operated by Microsoft as part
of its suite of Office Online services.
Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service developed by Google. Launched
on April 24, 2012, Google Drive allows users to store files on their servers, synchronize files
across devices, and share files.
iCloud is a cloud storage and cloud computing service from Apple Inc. launched on October
12, 2011. As of February 2016, the service had 782 million users.
Mozy is an online backup service for both Windows and macOS users. Linux support was
made available in Q3, 2014. In 2007 Mozy was acquired by EMC, and in 2013 Mozy was
included in the EMC Backup Recovery Systems division's product list.
IDrive Inc. is a technology company that specializes in data backup applications. Its flagship
product is IDrive, an online backup service available to Windows, Mac, iOS and Android
users.
Windows Server Backup is a built-in component of Windows Server 2008 R2 that consists
of a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, command-line tools, and Windows
PowerShell cmdlets. Windows Server Backup, like its predecessor – Ntbackup (on Windows Server
2000/2003), provides a complete solution for your day-to-day backup and recovery needs.
You can use Windows Server Backup to back up a full server (all volumes), a selected list of
volumes, the system state, or specific files or folders and to create a backup that you can use for
bare metal recovery.
