2
What is It

Customized Operating System Installer

If you want to save time and effort in installing Windows 7, you can create a customized
ISO image or installer. Through this, you can make the installer perform the installation by itself
without the need for you to answer questions, install updates manually, install drivers, tweak
Windows, or disable/uninstall Windows components.
How to do this? You will need the following:
1. RT Seven Lite
2. Windows 7 computer

RT Seven Lite provides a graphical user interface where we can easily configure settings
for the customized installer. One limitation of RT Seven Lite is that it can only run on a Windows
7 computer and can only customize Windows 7 32 and 64 bit installers.

You can use the NTLite application for Windows 8 and 8.1 but for this module, you will
only use the Windows 7 operating system throughout the courseware.

Download the appropriate version of RT Seven Lite. Make sure that you have an ISO
image of the installer of Windows 7.

Here are the steps or procedures in installing RT Seven Lite

Step 1: Install RT Seven Lite by running the .exe file. Follow the instructions until the installation
is finished.
Step 2: Run RT Seven Lite. A loading screen will appear.
Step 3: A graphical user interface of RT Seven Lite will appear. Click on Browse, then choose
ISO file.

3
A dialog box should appear where you will indicate the path where your ISO file is. Look
for the directory where you saved the Windows 7 ISO image

Step 4: Click Open. This will tell the software that the selected ISO image will be used for
customization.

Step 5: Click “Path” then specify where you want to extract the image.

A window will appear where you can choose the folder where you want to extract the
ISO contents.

4
Step 6: Click “Okay” to start extracting the files of the ISO image.

Step 7. After extracting the files, a dialog box will appear asking which version of Windows 7 you
will install (depending on the version of the ISO file you used). For this module, we will use
Windows 7 Professional. Click “OK”

After you choose a version, RT Seven Lite will now load the contents of the ISO image
preparing it for your configuration settings. When it is done, the Window should look like this.

Step 8: When the loading is finished, click on the “Task” button on the left side of the window. A
number of check boxes and options will appear in the middle of the window.

5
In the “Task Selection” area, you will see a drop-down labelled “Quick Start”. In here,
there are presets ot pre-made options for customization. The default option is “Custom…”.

Note: If you want to do more customization like user interface modifications, animation changes,
and advanced options, you can refer to the “Getting Started with RT Seven Lite”. This is where
you can see all descriptions regarding the customization you can do with Windows 7.

For this module, you will learn how to make an ISO automated installer and remove some
features that you don’t want to install in the computer. Now, check the Components, Un-
attended, and ISO Bootable check boxes.

Step 9: Click the “Features Removal” button on the left side of the window for you t
check/uncheck Windows 7 features. There are two boxes of features. If you want to permanently
remove features, check the features listed in the left box. Be careful with checking the features
in this box because you might mistakenly remove a tool/feature that you might need in the future.

If you want to disable the features, uncheck the features in the right box. You can later
turn on these features using “Turn On/Off Windows Features” in Control Panel.

When you are done, you can now move to configure the ISO to be an automated
bootable installer.

Step 10: Now, to make an automated installer or Un-Attended installer, click on the “Un-
Attended” button on the left side of the window. This will show the options for the unattended
installation.

In the upper part of the window, you can see numerous tabs. Gene, OOBE, Regional,
RunOnce, and Hard Disk Configurations. In this module, we will only discuss the use of General,

6
OOBE, and Regional to make the automated installer. Now check the check box as shown in
the next image.

By doing so, installation time will be lessened by about half because you will no longer
need to configure stuff during the installation. You can now specify the username, password,
and other info then wait for the installation to be finished.

Next, for Out-of-the-Box-Experience or OOBE, you can already specify the Network
Location, protection, and skip other settings like “Skip user OOBE”.

In the Regional tab, you can specify the Keyboard or input method, Currency and date
format, Time zone, and UI language. You can always leave it’s default settings as they are if ou
want to.

In the Hard Disk Configurations tab, you can specify which drive you want to install the
operating system. Here you can also automatically format the selected drive before installing the
operating system. To do so, select the “Format” check box.

7
Note: be cautious in using this feature because you might suddenly format a drive and
erase its contents by accident. If you are done, click the “Apply” button.

Step 11. After you clicked the “Apply” button, a new pane will appear. Click the “Commit” button
to finalize your settings.

Step 12. After the operation is completed, you can now make a custom bootable ISO image. To
do so, click the ISO-Bootable button on the left side of the screen. Under Mode, choose “Create
Image”.
Enter the “Volume name” then press the Make ISO” button to start the operation.

The operation should take few minutes, then it will show a prompt telling it’s done.

8
You are now done configuring your custom installer. Look for the ISO image in the folder
you specified in the initial steps.

What’s More

In your journal, write your understanding in every steps about customizing operating system
installer.

What I Have Learned

Based on the information given above, when customizing operating system installer, we
must follow the steps seriously to have a successful customized operating system installer.

After reading this information sheet, you must prepare the necessary installers for the
operating system and application software by the following set procedures.

You will learn how to use CMD and Rufus to prepare bootable DVDs and flash drives.

What’s In

How to create a bootable disk?

What are the steps or procedures involve in creating a bootable disk?

What’s New

Look at the picture below. What is this window for?

14
How CMD works in creating a bootable flash drive or disk? How about Rufus installer?

What is It

Bootable Devices
A boot device is a kind of hardware that needs or holds the file being required to start the
computer. Examples of bootable devices are floppy disk, CR-ROM drive, DVD drive, and flash
drive.
Operating System Installation without using a physical disk or DVD of the installer by
using an ISO image of the installer, But first, what is an ISO image?
An ISO Image is simply an archived/compressed file of an optical disc. It contains every
bit of data on the written sector of the optical disk including its file system.
Using the ISO image of a Windows installer, you can easily prepare a portable bootable
device that we can use to install your operating system.

Bootable Flash Drive

There are many methods in preparing a bootable flash drive.

Method 1: Use Windows CMD

Yu can use CMD or the Command Prompt to prepare a bootable flash drive. Before you
proceed, be sure to prepare the ISO file that you will use for the installation. Be sure to back up
any data that you have in the flash drive before proceeding.

Step 1. Plug-in a suitable flash drive to a working computer.

Step 2. Open the “start” menu and type “CMD”.
• Right-click “Command Prompt” and choose “Run as Administrator”.
• You can also Press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER instead.
• This will open CMD in Administrator Mode

Step 3. In the command prompt, type “diskpart” hit enter. This will appear.

Step 4. Type “list disk” and press enter.

• This command will show all the disk on the computer. Take note of the drive
number/letter of your USB Flash drive.
• If you are confused with the drives you see, refer to the size mentioned in the list.
It should be with the same as the capacity of your flash drive.

15
Step 5. Type the disk number of your flash drive in the command prompt and press enter.
• Example, if your disk is disk 1, you type “select disk 1”
• You will be notified that Disk 1 is now selected.

Step 6. Type “clean” in the command prompt and press enter.

• This command will erase all the content in the flash drive.
• You will again notified that DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk.

Step 7. Create new partition by typing “create partition primary” or “create part pri” in the
command prompt then press enter.
• You will be notified that DiskPart succeeded in creating the specified partition.

Step 8. Select the partition you have created by typing “select partition 1” or “select part 1” in the
command prompt.
• You will be notified that Partition 1 is now the selected partition.

16
Step 9. Format the partition by typing “ format fs=ntfs quick” then press enter.
• You can also format to FAT32.
• Wait until formatting reached 100%

Step 10. Type “active” in the command prompt and press enter.

Step 11. Type “exit” in the command prompt and press enter
• This command will exit from the diskpart window.
Step 12. If you already finished preparing the installer image file, save it to your Flash drive.

Method 2: Using Rufus

Using Rufus is a convenient way to prepare a bootable flash drive.
After downloading the Rufus software, make sure you are logged into the Administrator
account on the PC you are using to avoid any issues. The process of preparing the bootable
disk using Rufus will still erase all contents of the flash drive, so make sure you have backed up
the files you don’t want to lose.

17
Step 1. Plug-in a suitable flash drive to a working computer

Step 2. Run Rufus. If asked for software update, choose No for now.
You will now see the user interface of Rufus. This is something that CMD lacks that
makes Rufus easier to use.

Step 3. Rufus will immediately detect your USB Flash Drive, but to be sure, check the data
selected in the drop-down boxes.
• On the devices selection, make sure that the name, drive letter, and drive size
match the name, letter, and size if your flash drive.

• You can modify other settings in here but for this installation, let’s leave the default
settings.
Step 4. Make sure that the option “Create a bootable disk using” is checked and “ISO Image” is
selected in the drop-down box.

18
Step 5. Now, click the Optional Drive button.

• This will open a dialog box where you will find the ISO image you are going to
use for the bootable flash drive.

Step 6. Find the ISO image then click Open. Rufus will automatically configure the settings to
match the ISO image.

You can specify a different label for the bootable flash drive by editing the content of
the textbox.

If everything is set correctly, press the Start button. This will begin the process.

A dialog box will appear. It will tell you that the operation will delete all content in your
flash drive, so better back up before proceeding. If you don’t need any backup, press OK to
proceed.

19
Step 7. Find the ISO image the click Open. Rufus will automatically configure the settings to
match the ISO.

Note: You can see a log of the steps in the operation by clicking the “log” button.

Step 8: When finished, click the “Close” button.

Verify if the files were copied to the flash drive (open your flash drive)

Step 9: Eject the flash drive and your done. You may now proceed to installing your operating
system using your portable bootable flash drive.

After reading this information sheet, you must be able to prepare the necessary
portable applications that the computer user requires by the following set of procedures. You
might need to gather or identify the must-have applications in each computer unit.

What’s In

1. How to create a bootable flash drive?

2. What are the two distinct method of creating a bootable flash drive?
3. What are the things needed in creating a bootable flash drive?
4. How to start creating bootable flash drive?

What’s New

How these portable applications help you?

25
What is It

Portable Application Software

A portable software or application characterized as standalone is an application
program that is designed to run on a computer without the need to be installed. This means
that the configuration information of the computer will be left intact.

This is especially useful if you need to run applications on the go and you don’t want
to bring your laptop. Instead, copy your favourite portable apps to a flash drive that you can
take with you and just run your apps from there while attached to any compatible computer
you might find along the way.

Where to get it?

Each kind of application usually has its own website or webpage. From there, you can
often choose which kind of package you are going to download. You can get a 32- or a 64-bit
app installer, or some other portable app package.

There is another way to run portable apps. PortableApps.com is a website that gathers
and supports many portable applications that you might need from development, multimedia,
and even educational apps.

Lists of Portable Applications

There is an extensive list of apps in PortableApps.com but we will list only some of the
commonly used ones here

Development Applications
1. Notepad++ Portable – lets you code programs or software in different
languages. It supports syntax/code highlighting or coloring for ease of use. It’s
like a stripped down version of an Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
but better than Windows Notepad.

26
2. XAMPP – it is a free open source web server solution package consisting
mainly of Apache HTTP Server, MariaDB database, and interpreters for scripts
made using PHP and Perl. XAMPP lets you create testing environments in the
development of software and web apps.

Multimedia Applications

1. Blender Portable – It is an open-source tool for 3D assets development. It is an

alternative to Maya/3DS Max which are commercial or paid apps.

2. GIMP Portable – It is an open-source alternative to Photoshop. It is a powerful-

enough image editing application and has enough tools and features that make
it a comparable to Photoshop.

27
There are many readily available portable applications that you can get from different
websites. Just take the time to look for the ones that suit your needs.
Find an app, download it to your flash drive or removable storage and run it anywhere
you want to. You can also copy it to the local disk of your computer if you want to have a local
copy for ease of use.
