Lesson Activity Sheet In: Computer Systems Servicing

This document provides a lesson activity sheet on internet protocol addressing for a senior high school computer systems servicing class. It includes objectives to discuss IP addressing components, differentiate between dynamic and static IP addresses, and configure correct IP addresses. The content section outlines procedures for assigning computer names and workgroup names, resetting and accessing routers, configuring wireless networks, and setting up local area networks using routers and switches. Assessment activities test students' knowledge of networking devices and configuring routers, and require applying IP addressing skills.

Internet Protocol Addressing (Part 2)

INTERNET PROTOCOL ADDRESSING

I. Introduction

Computer Networking is done via a different set of IP protocol suites.

The most commonly used protocols are the TCP and IP. TCP stands for
Transmission Control Protocol and IP stands for Internet Protocol.
Every protocol has a specifically layered architecture along with its own
set of functionalities.

II. Learning Competency/ Unit of Competency

Lesson 5: Internet Protocol Addressing

III. Nominal Duration

2 Days

IV. Objectives/ Learning Outcomes

1. discuss the information about IP addressing and its components;
2. know the difference between dynamic and static ip address;
3. know how to configure correct IP address.

VI. Procedure (Knowledge)

Assigning Computer Name and Group Name

To assign computer name and workgroup name on a computer, follow

these steps:

1. On System Properties window, click Computer Name tab

2. Click Change button
3. Type the Computer Name and Workgroup Name then click OK
4. You will need to restart the system so the changes will take
effect

Router Configuration

All routers are different and as

such may require different
configuration steps. You are
highly encouraged to bring your
router to read the product
manual. You will need a working
ethernet port on your
laptop/desktop to plug into, or
have an ethernet adaptor if you do
https://its.ucsc.edu/resnet/docs/router-
not have a port on your device. configuration.html

3
Resetting

1. Connect the power cord

2. Unplug ALL Ethernet connections
3. Hold down the reset button for at least 15 seconds

https://its.ucsc.edu/resnet/docs/router-configuration.html

Cable Setup

1. Connect your computer (PC or MAC) to the WAN port, only

2. DO NOT connect the wall port to any port on the Router yet!
** DO NOT use the LAN ports

https://its.ucsc.edu/resnet/docs/router-configuration.html

4
Accessing Router

1. Open your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) with the

computer connected to the Router
2. Enter the IP address found in your wireless settings (Settings>Wi-
Fi>Hardware Properties for Windows 10/ Network Preferences for
Macs) into the Address Bar of your browser. Most IP addresses
start with 192.168. Push Enter.
3. User name is often blank or "admin". Password is often blank,
"admin", or "password"
4. Password is often blank, "admin", or "password"
5. Click “OK”

Default Screen

5
Configure Wireless SSID

1. Click “Wireless”
2. Click “Basic Wireless Settings”
3. Enter a desired name into the “Wireless Network Name (SSID)” field
4. Write down your Wireless Network SSID, it will be used for later. Do
not share your SSID or password with anyone unless you trust
them. Users can piggyback on your credentials and crowd your
network.
5. Click “Save Settings”

https://its.ucsc.edu/resnet/docs/router-configuration.html

Configure Wireless with WPA Security Key

You must secure your wireless network, failure to do so may result in

disconnection by your ISP. Your Security Mode should be using WPA or
WPA-2.

For WPA

1. Click “Wireless”
2. Click “Wireless Security”
3. Select “WPA Pre-Shared Key” in the “Security Mode” field
4. Set the "WPA algorithm" to "AES"
5. (if available) otherwise, use "TKIP"
6. Type in your WPA Shared Key. It should be between 8 and 32
characters- the longer the better. Make sure it is something you can
remember but that is hard to guess. You

6
7. may want to write it down, temporarily, so that you can remember it
for when you configure your computer to connect to the now-secure
access point.
8. Click “Save Settings”

https://its.ucsc.edu/resnet/docs/router-configuration.html

Final Cable Setup

1. Connect your computer (PC or MAC) to the WAN port only, DO

NOT use the
2. LAN ports
3. Connect to an appropriate LAN port.

https://its.ucsc.edu/resnet/docs/router-configuration.html

7
Verification

1. Restart your computer

2. On the desktop go to “START” >>> “RUN”, type “cmd” under the
Open field, and click “OK”
3. On Windows: Type “ipconfig /release” into the black screen and
push “Enter”, then type “ipconfig /renew” into the black screen
and push “Enter”
4. On Macs, simply check your Network Preferences again to find
your updated IP address
5. Your IP Address should now begin with 192.168.xxx.xxx, or
simply follow the sample ip address we have discussed in
week 7.

Setting Up a Local Area Network (3 or More Computers using switch)

To setup LAN using switch only, follow these steps:

1. Connect all computers to the switch using straight through

cable.
2. Assign IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, Computer name and
workgroup name on each computer

You may refer to the sample diagram below on Local Area Network using
switch setting.

8

Area Network using Router

Setting up Local Area Network using router, is easier than without. Just
follow the following steps:

1. Connect all computers on the switch using straight thru cable.

2. Connect the switch to your router.
3. Assign computer name and workgroup name for each computer.
4. That’s it! Note that there is no need to assign IP address because
router by default settings is a DHCP server. That means it is the
one who shall assign IP address on each computer connected to
it.
5. Computers equipped with WIFI devices could connect through
signal which a Wireless router sends automatically by default.

VII. Assessment (Knowledge)

Activity 1 Direction: Give the function of the following device in
networking.

1. Router - ________________________________________________________
2. Switch - ________________________________________________________
3. Patch Panel - ___________________________________________________
4. LAN or Ethernet Cable - _________________________________________
5. Hub - __________________________________________________________

10
Activity 2 (Understanding) Direction: In a paragraph, discuss how to
configure a router.

_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________

Activity 3 (Performance)
Directions: Given are the following materials, you should be able to
assign ip addresses.

Steps/Procedure:

1. Read the Lesson Activity Sheet Quarter 3 - Week 8 on IP

addressing

2. Connect all computers to the switch using straight through cable.

3. Assign IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, Computer name and

workgroup name on each computer
