Division of Pasig City
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Computer Systems Servicing NCII G11 module on

Update Operating System.

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed
by its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou
Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig
through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5
Cs, namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and
Character while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box
in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to Computer Systems Servicing NCII Module on How to use

VMware. The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It
is often used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may
learn, create and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource
signifies that you as a learner is capable and empowered to successfully
achieve the relevant competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your
academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material
while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectation – This points to the set of knowledge and skills that you will
learn after completing the module.

Pretest – This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson at hand.

Recap – This part of the module provides a review of concepts and skills
that you already know about a previous lesson.

Lesson – This section discusses the topic in the module.

Activities – This is a set of activities that you need to perform.

Wrap-Up – This section summarizes the concepts and application of the

lesson.

Valuing – This part integrates a desirable moral value in the lesson.

 You had learned in our last module that Windows Server 2008 is a server
operating system produced by Microsoft and based on Windows NT 6.0.
 The Editions of Windows Server 2008 are; Windows Server 2008
Foundation, Windows Server 2008 Standard (IA-32 and x86-64), Windows
Server 2008 Enterprise (IA-32 and x86-64), and Windows Server 2008
Datacenter (IA-32 and x86-64).
 You had also learned the procedures on how to install Windows Server 2008.

WINDOWS UPDATES
Windows Updates can be very annoying. They pop up randomly especially
when you are in the middle of something important. At times, the Windows Update
won’t allow you to shut down the computer because it is in the middle of installing
updates. Even though these are so annoying, it is critical that you keep your device
secure by installing the latest available windows updates.
Windows Update is a free Microsoft service used to provide updates for the
Windows operating system and other Microsoft software. Windows Update can
also be used to update drivers for popular hardware devices.
Patches and other security updates are routinely released through Windows
Update on the second Tuesday of every month. Updates often include feature
enhancements and security updates to protect Windows from malware and
malicious attacks. You can also use Windows Update to access the update history
that shows all the updates that have been installed to the computer through the
Windows Update service.

WINDOWS UPDATES CATEGORIES:

Security Updates
These updates patch security vulnerabilities that could allow a system to
become compromised. Security updates are classified as critical, important,
moderate, low or non-rated. Security updates fix security holes which is usually
present in every operating system in a computer.
A hacker or malware programmer could use these security loopholes to gain
access and steal information from the computer.
Critical Updates
The code that makes up the Windows operating system may contain critical
errors or incompatibilities. In order to fix this, Microsoft releases critical updates
to fix these vulnerabilities and errors in Windows.
Critical Updates fix any major issue that is found in Microsoft products that
could cause software errors or unexpected behavior. This kind of updates together
with Security Updates should be set to download and install automatically.

Software Updates
Non-critical issues, such as additional features and minor bugs, are
addressed using Software Updates. Microsoft releases these updates to add new
feature or improve an existing feature in Windows.

Service Packs
Service packs contains a rollup of all patches up to date for a specific piece
of software or operating system and usually have additional feature changes. A
service pack is a tested set of all updates. It may contain additional fixes for
problems that are found internally since the release of the product. It may also
contain a limited number of customer-requested design changes or features.

POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF OUTDATED OPERATING SYSTEM

The possible consequences of not installing security updates are damaged
software, loss of data and even identity theft. Every year malware causes damage
to every computer worldwide. The main reason for that is due to users who don’t
install critical software or operating system updates. Malware exploited loopholes
that exist in every software ever developed. Vulnerabilities can potentially be
exploited an hour after becoming publicly known.
Some ways to control and monitor the deployment of Microsoft updates in a
corporate environment is with products like Windows Server Update Services
(WSUS). It enables administrators to deploy the latest Microsoft product updates
and fully manage the distribution of updates to computers on your network.
It is critical to install security updates to protect your systems from
malicious attacks. In the long run, it is also important to install software updates,
not only to access new features, but also to be on the safe side in terms of security
loop holes being discovered in outdated programs.

UPDATE WINDOWS 10
In Windows 10, you decide when and how to get the latest updates to keep
your device running smoothly and securely. Here are the steps on how to manage
your options and see available updates for you operating system.

For some reasons, you don’t want to be interrupted by these automatic
updates from your computer and wants to disable it once and for all. There are a
lot of options on how to enable or disable automatic updates in windows update.
On this module we will discuss two options on how to enable or disable it.

Enable or Disable Automatic Updates using Group Policy

 This option is not available and will not work in Windows 10 Home.
Microsoft has prevented disabling automatic updates in the Home edition.
 This option will only work in the Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions.

The first step in disabling automatic updates using group policy is to press
windows key + R on your keyboard. Then type the “gpedit.msc” and press enter.

The local group policy editor will open. Double click “Computer
Configuration” on the right side of the pane.
2

Then double click “Administrative Templates” and choose “Windows

Components”

3 4

Then double click “Windows Update”.

Then double click “Configure Automatic Updates”.

6

7 Select Disabled and then click Apply and ok.

9
Enable or Disable Automatic Updates by Enabling or Disabling Windows
Update service
 If you disable the Windows Update service, Windows will no longer be able
to automatically download and install updates.
 When you are ready to download and install updates, you will need to enable
and start the Windows Update service again, then check for updates.
 This option will work in all Windows 10 editions.
 Windows 10 is notorious about randomly automatically enabling the
Windows Update service (even if disabled), so this option is not always
reliable.

The first step in disabling automatic updates through windows update

service is to open your control panel.

Then change the view from category to large icons.

2

Select “Administrative Tools” and then double click “Services”.

4

Scroll down until you see the “Windows Update”. Double click “Windows
Update”.

6
Select the button “Stop” and then choose “disabled for the startup type”.
Click Apply then Ok.
